TITLE: Heat
AIM: To show that the heat energy lost by hot water is equal to the heat energy gained by cold
water

#6 HEAT -MM MARK

( 1 each)
1. Reduces heat loss by turning off fans and closing windows
2. Avoids error due to parallax when reading the meniscus on the
measuring cylinder
3. Immerses the thermometer bulb completely in the liquid
4. Student handles hot water using mittens/pot holder/forcepts
5. Quickly transfers measured liquids to the calorimeter (Styrofoam
cup)
6. Stirs the mixture to allow for even distribution of heat
7. Takes reading while the thermometer bulb is immersed in the liquid
8. Student avoids spillage of water when pouring
9. Student ensures there are no droplets of water clinging to the side
of the measuring cylinder after pouring out the water
10. Repeats experiment to reduce random errors

TITLE:Heat (Method of Mixtures)

AIM:To show that the heat energy lost by hot water is equal to the heat energy gained by cold
water
THEORY:
The law of conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed but
converted from one form to another.
The specific heat capacity c, of a substance can be defined as the quantity of heat required to
raise the temperature of 1kg the substance by 1K.
Heat transfer between two items or objects is as a result of a temperature difference between the
items or objects. The heat energy of a body is as follows:
E = m c ∆Ө
Where E is the heat energy in Joules (J), m is the mass in kilograms (kg) and ∆Ө is the change in
temperature in degrees Celsius (°C)

APPARATUS AND MATERIALS:

3 Calorimeters (polystyrene cups) 2 measuring cylinders or beakers (≥50 ml)
Thermometer (0-100°C) hot water bath
Ice-water/cold water

METHOD:
1. Using the measuring cylinder or beaker measure 50 cm3 or 50ml of hot water and pour it into
a polystyrene cup and record the temperature as ӨHot using the thermometer.
2. Repeat step 1 using the cold water and record the temperature as ӨCold.
3. Pour the hot water into the cup with the cold water
4. Stir the mixture and measure and record the final temperature was as ӨFinal.
5. Repeat the procedure two more times and find the average temperature.
6. Tabulate all readings in the table provided.
7. Use the results to prove that the heat lost by the hot water was equal to the heat gained by the
cold water.

RESULT:

CALCULATIONS:
Specific heat capacity, c of water = 4200J/kg/K = 4200J/kg/⁰C
Density of water = 1g/cm3
Mass of water = ρV (in grams) NOTE: 1cm3=1mL therefore
= 1g/cm3x (50 cm3)
= 50g
= 50g ÷ 1000 = 0.05kg
