Questions 1 – 8 are based on the following passage.

It is estimated that some 25 percent of all human pregnancies terminate spontaneously in abortion, with
three out of four abortions occurring during the first three months of pregnancy. Some women apparently have
a tendency to abort, and recurrent abortion decreases the probability of subsequent successful childbirth.
The causes of spontaneous abortions, or miscarriage, are not clearly established. Abnormal development
5 of the embryo or placental tissue, or both, is found in about half the cases; these abnormalities may be due to
inherent faults in the germ cells or may be secondary to faulty implantation of the developing ovum or to other
characteristics of the maternal environment. Severe vitamin deficiencies have been shown to play a role in
abortions in experimental animals. Hormone deficiencies also have been found in women who are subject to
recurrent abortions. These may be caused also by such maternal abnormalities as acute infectious diseases,
10 systemic diseases such as nephritis and diabetes, severe trauma, and excessive physical activity. Uterine
malformations, including tumors, are responsible in some instances, and extreme anxiety and other psychic
disturbances may contribute to the premature expulsion of the fetus.
The most common symptom of threatened abortion is vaginal bleeding, with or without intermittent pain.
About one-fourth of all pregnant women bleed at some time during early pregnancy, however, and up to 75
15 percent of these women carry the fetus for the full term. Treatment for threatened abortion usually consists of
bed rest. Almost continuous bed rest throughout pregnancy is required in some cases of repeated abortion, and
vitamin and hormone therapy also may be given. In addition, surgical correction of uterine abnormalities may
be indicated in certain cases of repeated abortion.
Spontaneous abortion may result in expulsion of all or part of the content of the uterus, or the embryo
20 may die and be retained in the uterus for weeks or months in a so-called missed abortion. Most physicians
advocate the surgical removal of any residual embryonic or placental tissue in order to avoid possible irritation
or infection of the uterine lining.

Questions 9 – 15 are based on the following passage.

The older we get, the more likely we are to lapse into a sedentary lifestyle. (1) Recent research reports
an estimated 67% of older adults sitting for more than eight hours per day, whereas only 28% to 34% of adults
ages 65% to 74 are physically active.
A sedentary life can affect our health in ways we may not realize, and the consequences of too much
sitting every day can be adverse. (2) For example, prolonged sitting, like spending hours watching television,
increase our chance of developing venous thrombosis, which potentially leads to fatal blood clots that form in
the deep veins of legs. (3) In fact, people who watched television the most had a 70% greater risk of suffering
from venous thrombosis compared with those who never or seldom watched TV.
On the flip side, squeezing in extra movement during the day can have a big impact. For instance,
standing more can help us lose weight and keep it off. Everyday activities that incorporate more walking also
build up muscles, which may help us live longer. (4) Researchers have found that loss of leg muscle strength and
mass is associated with slower walking speeds among older adults. Slower speeds are linked with lower 10- year
survival rate for people after age 75.
One way to combat the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle is to work small bits of exercise into daily
routine. It does not matter if we are sweating or feeling like we are working hard as long as we are still moving
our arms and legs, stimulating our muscles, and working our joints. (5) We can focus on adding just 30 minutes
of extra activity into our day, three days a week, or we can break it down into smaller segments, like 10 minutes
in the morning, afternoon and evening.
