Assignment Set-1
1. When a train is traveling along a straight track at 2 m/s, it begins to
accelerate at a = (60 V −4) m/s2, where v is in m/s. Determine its velocity v
and the position 3 s after the acceleration.

2. The particle passes point O at the speed of 8 m/s. Between O and B, the
speed increases at the rate of 4√ V m/s2, where v is the speed in m/s.
Determine the magnitude of the acceleration when the particle is (a) just to
the left of point A; and (b) just to the right of point A.

3. The firehose is being uncoiled from its reel at the constant speed of 2 m/s.
Determine the normal component of acceleration of point A on the rim of the
reel (a) at the instant shown in the figure; and (b) when almost all the hose
has left the reel.

4. A skateboarder rides down a parabolic half-pipe. The profile of the half pipe
is y = x2/80 m, where X is in meters. Determine the magnitude of the rider’s
acceleration at point A given that VA = 12 m/s and V̇ A= 4 m/s2.

Assignment Set-1
5. A rock is thrown upward from the level ground in such a way that the
maximum height of its flight is equal to its horizontal range d. (a) At what
angle θ is the rock thrown? (b) What If? Would your answer to part (a) be
different on a different planet? (c) What is the range d max the rock can attain
if it is launched at the same speed but at the optimal angle for maximum
range?
6. The collar B slides on a rod that has the spiral shape described by R = 0.3−
0.4(θ/π) m. The pin attached to the collar engages a slot in the arm OA,
which is rotating at the constant angular speed θ̇ = 2 rad/s. Find the polar
components of the velocity and acceleration of collar B at (a) θ = 90 ° ; and (b)
θ = 60° .

7. The telescopic arm of the robot slides in the mount A, which rotates about a
horizontal axis at O. End B of the arm traces the vertical line shown with the
constant speed VB. In terms of VB, b, and θ, determine expressions for (a) θ̇
and Ṙ ; and (b) θ̈ and R̈ .
