3. GEOLOGY OF PASCHIM BARDHAMAN DISTRICT:
Paschim Bardhaman District is the 23rd district of West Bengal. It was formed on 7th
April, 2017 bifurcating erstwhile Burdwan District. The new district comprises two
subdivisions viz. Asansol Sadar and Durgapur. With the division, the agrarian part of
Burdwan now fall under East Burdwan, while the industrial hub in west Burdwan.
Burdwan is the most advanced district in West Bengal industrially and agriculturally. The
eastern part is enriched by the alluvial soil of Damodar river and is one of the most
productive agricultural regions in West Bengal. The western part of the district, chiefly
Asansol, is rich in coal and other mineral resources. This part is highly industrialised and
contains factories based on iron and steel processing, as well as many cement factories.
Durgapur, Burnpur, and Kulti are in the western part of the district. It also contains power
plants at Durgapur and Dishergarh.

Average temperature in hot season is 30° C while at the cold season is 20° C. Average
rainfall is 1496 mm. The cold season starts from about the middle of November and
continues till the end of February. March to May is dry summer intervened by tropical
cyclones and storms. June to September is wet summer while October and November
is autumn.

i) Sinking of bore holes / drill holes:
The boring / drilling work at this site has been conducted with the help of a drilling
machine along with shell and augur attachment. The drilling had been conducted by
rotary drilling technique. SPT samples have been collected as per IS: 2131 – 1981.
Diamond bit was used for drilling purpose. Drill bit was attached to a single / double
tube core barrel and the core barrel was attached to a string of drill rod. A steady stream
of water under pressure was fed to the cutting bit through the rod and the barrel. The
water acts as a coolant and during its return flow carried the cutting to surface. The drill
rod was rotated under pressure which rotated the bit and grinned the groove around the
core. Each core feuded up into and was retained by the core barrel. The core barrel
was brought to the surface at intervals for removing of core. The NX size (76mm) drill
hole was done in the field. A series of NX and HX type of casings were used to stabilise
the hole. Single tube core barrel are generally used for the collection of cores. But for
non-uniform, fissured, friable and soft rock as and when encountered double tube core
barrel was used to protect the coarse soil against action of the circulating fluid. The
operation was carefully monitored using specially trained skilled workmen under
technical supervision of S. S. Solution.

ii) Indexing and storage of core drill:

The cores immediately on their withdrawal from the core barrel were placed in a core
tray and then transferred to core boxes specially made for this purpose. The cores were
arranged inside the box standing from the side nearest to the hinge from the left to the
right end of the box in the order of increasing depth. All core pieces were numbered
serially, omitting very small pieces in the run. An arrow ( ) mark was marked towards
increasing depth on every pieces of core. In case of core recovery when anticipated to
be poor, the return drill water was collected and the settled sludge was recovered &
suitably packed in polythene bags and kept in the core boxes with separating wooden
blocks on either side & marked with the depth & the inscription washings. All indexing
& storage of drill cores were done as per specification given in IS: 4078 – 1980. Where
no intact core pieces of rock sample is found through drilling operation the layer
should be treated as soil mass.

4.2 Standard Penetration Test:
The standard penetration test is a well-established and unsophisticated method, which
was developed in the United States around 1925. It has since undergone refinements
with respect to equipment and testing procedure. The testing procedure varies in
different parts of the world. Therefore standardisation of SPT was essential in order to
facilitate the comparison of results from different investigations. The equipment is
simple, relatively inexpensive and rugged. Another advantage is that representative but
disturbed soil samples are obtained. The reliability of the method and the accuracy of
the result depend on the experience and care of the engineer / engineering supervisor
on site.
A split barrel sampler is driven from the bottom of a pre-bored hole into the soil by means
of a 63.5 kg hammer, dropped freely from a height of 0.75 m. The diameter of the pre-
bored hole varies normally between 60 and 200 mm. If the hole does not stay open by
itself, casing or drilling mud should be used. The sampler is first driven to a depth of 15
cm below the bottom of the pre-bored hole, then the number of blows required to drive
the sampler another 30 cm into the soil, the so called N 30 count, is recorded. The rods
used for driving the sampler should have sufficient stiffness. The quality of test results
depends on several factors, such as actual energy delivered to the head of the drill rod,
the dynamic properties (impedance) of the drill rod, the method of drilling and bore hole
stabilisation. The SPT is generally conducted in all types of deposit. But the SPT can
be difficult to perform in loose sands and silts below the ground water level, as the bore
hole can collapse and disturb the soil to be tested. The following factors can affect the
test results, nature of the drilling fluid in the bore hole, diameter of the bore hole, the
configuration of the sampling spoon and the frequency of delivery of the hammer blows.
Therefore, it should be noted that drilling and stabilisation of the bore hole must be
carried out with care. The measured N-value (blows / 0.30 m) is so-called standard
penetration resistance of the soil. The penetration resistance is influenced by the stress
conditions at the depth of test. Peck et al. (1974) proposed, based on settlement
observations of footings, the following relationship for correction of confinement
pressure. The measured N value is to be multiplied by a correction factor C N to obtain
a reference value, N’ corresponding to an effective overburden stress of 1 t/ft2
(approximately 107 kPa).

SS SOLUTION (SS/GT/22/ SAIL-ISP_REFINING UNIT/125_FINAL_R0) Page 7 of 24

GEO-TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR INSTALLATION OF THIRD LADLE
FURNACE IN SECONDARY REFINING UNIT AT ISP, BURNPUR.
Thus N’ = N. CN
Where, CN is a stress correction factor.
Again CN = 0.77. log10 (20/p’)
Where p’ is the effective overburden pressure.
The second correction over the corrected value of N’ is due to fine or silty sand below
water table.
The reason for this correction is that for a measured N’ greater than 15 cm, the sand is
medium dense or denser. This means that when the hammer is dropped to drive the
tube cause the sand to dilate. Where water is present, this dilation causes negative pore
pressures to be developed.
For relatively clean sand, these pore water pressures are fully dissipated by the time the
next blow is applied. For sand, which has its pore space partly blocked by silts or clays
or is a very fine sand, the rate at which these negative pore water pressures dissipates
may very much lower. Therefore they may not be fully dissipated by the time, the next
blow is applied a second or so later. This may mean that there is a built up negative
pore water pressures as the blows are applied.
Since, there has been no change in total stress a reduction of pore water pressure (even
though it is temporary) must lead to a temporary increase in effective stress. Since the
greater the effective stress, the greater is the strength of the material being tested.
Therefore as the strength increase has only been caused temporarily because of dilation
effects. This effect is corrected after the correction of overburden pressure. However for
this correction, the following facts have been kept in mind.
 Sand layer must be below the water table.
 N’ value must be greater than 15.
 Have reduced permeability.
The resistance (N30) has been correlated with the consistency of clayey soil and also
the relative density of non-cohesive soils can be classified as shown below in table –
1, Brooms (1986).

The test is mainly used to estimate the relative stiffness and strength (bearing capacity)
of soils. Deformation characteristics of granular soils can be estimated from empirical
correlations, Peck et al. (1974). It is also possible to get some indications from SPT of
the shear strength in cohesive soils. The SPT used frequently for the evaluation of the
liquefaction potential of water saturated, loose sands and silts in seismic areas, Seed
and De Alba (1986).
For this work, the method used for SPT is as per IS: 2131 – 1981.

4.3 Collection of Disturbed samples:

After each standard penetration test, sufficient quantities of disturbed samples were
collected from split spoon sampler. Disturbed samples were also collected from auger
when it was operated. These samples were preserved in the polythene packets, labelled
properly and sent to laboratory for identification and testing.

4.4 Electrical Resistivity Test:

The Electrical Resistivity Test (ERT) has been carried out at the locations specifies by
the client as per the IS: 3043 (1987).

4.6 Laboratory Tests:

Laboratory tests have been conducted as per IS specifications on soil samples
(Disturbed and Un-disturbed) to determine the following properties.

i) Natural Moisture Content
The natural moisture content of soil is determined from samples taken in the field and
placed in a container which is then sealed to prevent loss of moisture by evaporation.
Natural moisture content determinations are valuable in interpreting information
obtained from test borings.
Generally, 100g of soil is enough to determine the moisture content of fine grained soils.
Larger samples are required for soils that contain gravel. Normally, moisture content
samples are placed in metal dishes (canisters) that have tight fitting covers. When the
moisture content test is to be performed within 1 day after the sample is obtained,
sealing of the container is not required. If a longer time interval will elapse between
sampling and testing, the containers may be sealed. Natural moisture content have
been determined in the laboratory as per IS: 2720 (Part 2) – 1973.

ii) Bulk Density and Dry Density

Soil Bulk density is defined as the ratio of the mass of dry solids to the bulk volume of
the soil occupied by those dry solids. The bulk volume includes the volume of the solids
and the pore space. Bulk density is needed for converting water percentage by
weight to content by volume, for calculating porosity and void ratio when the
particle density is known, and for estimating the weight of a volume of soil too
large to weight conveniently.
The Dry Density = Bulk Density / (1 + Moisture Content)

iii) Specific Gravity of Soil

The ratio of the unit weight of a material to the unit weight of distilled water at 40C is a
common definition of specific gravity. Soil specific gravities, however, are normally
referred to the weight of water at 200C. In itself, the specific gravity is not an index
property of a soil. It is, however, required for determination of the unit weight of soil and
in many computations.
While it is possible to have a range of values from 2.2 to 3.5, most soils have
specific gravity from 2.60 to 2.80. Any values outside of this latter range should
be viewed sceptically and a retest should be made to verify the value. Where
specific values are not available, the following can be assumed for local soils:

SS SOLUTION (SS/GT/22/ SAIL-ISP_REFINING UNIT/125_FINAL_R0) Page 10 of 24

GEO-TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR INSTALLATION OF THIRD LADLE

Sand and gravels: 2.65
Silts and clay: 2.78
In our laboratory test, specific gravity has been determined as per IS: 2720 (Part 3 / Sec
2) – 1980.

iv) Particle Size Distribution

By the term particle size distribution, we mean sieve and hydrometer analysis.
Particle size distribution test is performed to determine the percentage of different grain
sizes contained within a soil. The mechanical or sieve analysis is performed to
determine the distribution of the coarser, larger sized particles and the hydrometer
method is used to determine the distribution of the finer particles.
The distribution of different grain sizes affects the engineering properties of soil.
Grain size analysis provides the grain size distribution, and it is required in
classifying the soil.
The test has been performed in the laboratory as per IS: 2720 (Part 4) – 1985

v) Shear strength parameters by Direct Shear test.

Direct shear test have been done as per IS: 2720 (Part – XIII). Consolidated drained
test condition in direct shear test has been done by the application of normal stress
increments for consolidation of the sample. When the consolidation has completely
occurred, the shear test has been done at a strain of 1.25 mm / min. A minimum of three
tests have been performed on separate specimens of the same density and at different
normal stress. The direct shear test has the advantage of being simple and inexpensive.
It is especially useful for obtaining the drained strength of sandy soils. It also can be
used with clays, but produces less reliable results because it is difficult to fully saturate
the sample and because we have no way of controlling the drainage conditions other
than varying the speed of the test.

vi) Shear strength parameters by Unconfined Compression test
The primary purpose of this test is to determine the unconfined compressive strength,
which is then used to calculate the unconfined cohesion of clayey soil. The unconfined
compressive strength (qu) is defined as the compressive stress at which an unconfined
cylindrical specimen of soil will fail in a simple compression test. In addition, in this test
method, the unconfined compressive strength is taken as the maximum load attained
per unit area, or the load per unit area at 15 % axial strain, whichever occurs first during
the performance of a test.
For soils, the undrained shear strength (su) is necessary for the determination of the
bearing capacity of foundations, dams etc. The undrained shear strength (su) of clays is
commonly determined from an unconfined compression test. The undrained shear
strength (su) of a cohesive soil is equal to one-half the unconfined compressive strength
(qu) when the soil is under the  = 00 condition ( = the angle of internal friction). The
most critical condition for the soil usually occurs immediately after construction, which
represents undrained conditions, when the undrained shear strength is basically equal
to the cohesion (c). This is expressed as Su = c = qu / 2. Then, as time passes, the pore
water in the soil slowly dissipates, and the inter-granular stress increases, so that the
drained shear strength (s), given by s =c + ’ tan , must be used. Where, ’ = inter-
granular pressure acting perpendicular to the shear plane; and ’ = ( – u),  = total
pressure, and u = pore water pressure; c and  are drained shear strength
parameters. In our laboratory, the unconfined compression test we generally find out
as per IS: 2720 (Part 10) – 1973.

vii) Consolidation Characteristics:

To obtain specimens for consolidation test, the odometer ring was placed on the
trimmed horizontal faces of the soil within the 10 cm diameter sampling tube and the
soil around the cutting edge was gradually removed with a spatula as the ring was gently
pushed into the soil. The ring with the soil was then removed by cutting across the soil
core with the help of a piano wire saw. Consolidation tests were run in floating ring type
odometers with standard load increment ration starting from 0.25 kg/ cm 2 in general.
Tests are carried out as per IS: 2720 (Part XV) 1986.

5. DISCUSSION OF FOUNDATION ASPECTS:

The aim of our Geo-technical studies at this INSTALLATION OF THIRD LADLE
FURNACE IN SECONDARY REFINING UNIT AT ISP, BURNPUR. We have
elaborately discussed with the soil parameters and considering the nature of the
structure we propose shallow foundation for lightly loaded structures.
For shallow foundation, we have considered various sizes of isolated square and
rectangular raft footing resting at different depth below the existing ground level. Detail
calculation of bearing capacity and settlement analysis of each bore hole have been
shown below in a tabular form along with the sub-soil profile.
We also propose deep pile foundation for heavily loaded structures. For deep pile
foundation we have suggested bored cast in situ pile.

550 & 600 MM DIA. OF PILE FOUNDATION:

7.1 BORED CAST- IN- SITU PILE FOUNDATION:

Based on the above information it is suggested to adopt deep foundation for higher
loaded structures. Pile capacity of deep foundation is given below for designer’s
choice.
TYPICAL SAMPLE CALCULATION OF DEEP FOUNDATION

By Static formula as given in IS: 2911 (Part- 1/ Sec.2) – 2010, Ultimate capacity in
skin friction (Qsu) and in end bearing (Qbu) are given by,
Qsu = .C.As + k.PD.tan.As
Where,  = Adhesion factor
C = average cohesion in respective stratum
As = Surface area of Pile Shaft
PD = Effective Overburden Pressure (limited value of PD increase linearly with
the depth (in homogeneous soil) up to a certain limit (15D) and remain
constant up to pile tip.
 = Angle of wall friction between pile and soil in degrees = 
k = Earth pressure co-efficient = 1.5 (let we considered)
And,
Qbu = Apx [ (Nc. Cp + 0.5 x D x ’ x N + PD. Nq )]
Where, Ap = Cross Sectional area of Pile tip.
Nc = Bearing Capacity Factor. (For cohesion)
Cp = Average Cohesion at Pile tip.
D = Diameter of Pile Shaft.
’ = Effective Unit Weight of Soil at Pile toe.
N and Nq = Bearing Capacity factors depending upon the angle of internal
friction  at pile tip.
PD = Effective Overburden Pressure as said above.
Note: PD (Effective overburden pressure) is calculated as per IS: 2911 (Part 1/Sec 1):2010.

8. COMBINATION OF LOADS AND SETTLEMENT CRITERION FOR DESIGN OF

SHALLOW FOUNDATION:

i) As per IS: 1904 – 1986, foundations shall be proposed for the following
combination of loads.
a) Dead load + Live load.
b) Dead load + Live load + Wind load.
Dead load also includes the weight of column / wall footings, foundations, and the
overlaying fill but excludes the weight of the displaced soil. Live loads from the
floors as specified in IS: 875 shall be taken in proportioning and designing the
foundation. Where wind or Seismic load is less than 25% of that due to dead and
live loads, foundations may be so proportioned that pressure due to combination
of dead + live + wind load does not exceed the safe bearing capacity by more than
25%. When seismic forces are considered, the safe bearing capacity shall be
increased as specified in clause 3.3.3. of IS: 1893 – 1975.

ii) Loads for settlement Analysis:

As per clause 16.1 of IS: 1904 – 1986, for foundations resting on course
grained or cohesion less soil, the settlement shall be estimated corresponding
to load combination of dead + live + wind seismic, since in such soils
settlements occur in a very short period of loading.
For fine grained soils i.e. cohesive deposits the settlement shall be estimated
corresponding to permanent loads, i.e. dead load and one half of the design
live load may be taken as being permanent.

iii) Allowable maximum settlement, differential settlement, angular

distortion:
The maximum settlement and angular distortion to be allowed as per IS: 1904
– 1986 for isolated foundations are shown in table–5. Since, no such
recommendations have been made in IS code for continuous strip footing,
table – 5 may me followed for strip footing also without any significant error.

Chapter IX
9. RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUDING REMARKS:
We have discussed about various sizes of Shallow foundation in the form of
isolated square and Rectangular Raft foundation resting at different depth below
the existing ground level.

For Shallow foundation, suggested safe pressure over different type of footing
resting at different depth below the existing ground may be taken as shown in the
following tables (Table: 3.1, chapter 6), considering both shear failure and
settlement criteria.

For deep pile foundation, suggested safe load carrying capacity of different
diameter of piles shown in the tables (Table: 4.1 & 4.2, chaper.7), considering both
shear failure and settlement criteria.

There should be an arrangement of load test on piles as per IS: 2911 – Part.1. The
minimum centre to centre spacing between piles should be kept equal to 3 times
the Pile diameter.

There should be an arrangement of plate bearing test as per IS: 9214-1979 to obtain
the modulus of subgrade reaction for design purpose if required.

Adequate care should be taken to remove loosened piece of rock after blasting,
washing and air jetting so that foundation rests on practically undisturbed rock
mass as per IS 12070:1987.

All works of construction of foundation shall be done strictly adhering to the IS

specifications under the technical supervision of competent and experienced
personnel. Safety of adjacent structures must be ensured during excavation for
construction of foundation.

INTRODUCTION:

Geophysical soil resistivity test was carried out for earthing purpose at proposed Area over 08
selected place (as per drawing for the Project) respectively in four different directions viz. N-S
(North- South), E-W (East – West),) on 5th December & 6th December 2022.The tests were carried
out by adopting ISI approved Wenner 4 Electrode method (IS: 3043 – 1987). In this test apparent
resistivity (Ohm-m) has been calculated for different spacing for all the places. The concluded
results have been tabulated in the following pages.

THEORY OF SOIL RESISTIVITY

Resistance is that property of a conductor which opposes electric current flow when a voltage is
applied across the two ends. Its unit of measure is the Ohm (Ω) and the commonly used symbol
is R. Resistance is the ratio of the applied voltage (V) to the resulting current flow (I) as defined
by the well-known linear equation from Ohm’s Law:

V =I× R
Where: V Potential Difference across the conductor (Volts)
I Current flowing through the conductor in (Amperes)
R Resistance of the conductor in (Ohms)
“Good conductors” are those with a low resistance. “Bad conductors” are those with a high
resistance. “Very bad conductors” are usually called insulators.
The Resistance of a conductor depends on the atomic structure of the material or its Resistivity
(measured in Ohm-m or Ω-m), which is that property of a material that measures its ability to
conduct electricity. A material with a low resistivity will behave as a “good conductor” and one
with a high resistivity will behave as a “bad conductor”. The commonly used symbol for resistivity
is ρ (Greek symbol rho).

The resistance (R) of a conductor can be derived from the resistivity as:

R = ρ× L
A
Where ρ Resistivity (Ω-m) of the conductor material
L Length of the conductor (m)
A Cross sectional Area (m2)
Resistivity is also sometimes referred to as “Specific Resistance” because, from the above
formula, Resistivity (Ω-m) is the resistance between the opposite faces of a cube of material with
a side dimension of 1 meter.
Consequently, Soil Resistivity is the measure of the resistance between the opposite sides of a
cube of soil with a side dimension of 1 meter.
In the USA, a measurement of -cm is used. (100 -cm = 1 -m)

CODE OF PRACTICE FOR EARTHING (AS PER IS 3043:1987)

1. RESISTANCE TO EARTH
1.0 Nature of Earthing Resistance
1.0.1 The earthing resistance of an electrode is made up of:
a) Resistance of the (metal) electrode,
b) Contact resistance between the electrode and the soil, and
c) Resistance of the soil from the electrode surface outward in the geometry set up for the
flow of current outward from the electrode to infinite earth.
The first two factors are very small fractions of an ohm and can be neglected for all practical
purposes. The factor of soil resistivity is discussed in 1.1.
1.1 Soil Resistivity
1.1.1 The resistance to earth of a given electrode depends upon the electrical resistivity of
the soil in which it is installed. This factor is, therefore, important in deciding which of many
protective systems to adopt.
The type of soil largely determines its resistivity and examples are given in Table 3. Earth
conductivity is, however, essentially electrolytic in nature and is affected, by the moisture content
of the soil and by the chemical composition and concentration of salts dissolved in the contained
water. Grain size and distribution, and closeness of packing are also contributory factors since
they control the manner in which the moisture is held in the soil. Many of these factors vary locally
and some seasonally so that the table should only be taken as a general guide.
Local values should be verified by actual measurement, and this is especially important where
the soil is stratified as, owing to the dispersion of the earth current, the effective resistivity depends
not only on the surface layers but also on the underlying geological formation.
It should also be noted that soil temperature has some effect (see 1.7), but is only important near
and below freezing point, necessitating the installation of earth electrodes at depths to which frost
will not penetrate. It is, therefore, recommended that the first metre of any earth electrode should
not be regarded as being effective under frost conditions.
While the fundamental nature and properties of a soil in a given area cannot be changed, use can
be made of purely local conditions in choosing suitable electrode sites and methods of preparing
the site selected to secure the optimum resistivity. These measures may be summarized as in
1.2 to 1.7.

PAGE R2 OF R16
REPORT ON EARTH RESISTIVITY TESTS FOR EARTHING PURPOSE IN PROJECT
“GEO-TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR INSTALLATION OF THIRD LADLE
FURNACE IN SECONDAY REFINING UNIT AT ISP, BURNPUR”

1.2 Where there is any option, a site should be chosen in one of the following types of soil in the
order of preference given:
a) Wet marshy ground (see 1.2);
b) Clay, loamy soil, arable land, clayey soil, clayey soil or loam mixed with small quantities of
sand;
c) Clay and loam mixed with varying proportions of sand, gravel and stones;
d) Damp and wet sand, peat.
Dry sand, gravel chalk, limestone, granite and any very stony ground should be avoided, and also
all locations where virgin rock is very close to the surface.

1.3 A site should be chosen that is not naturally well-drained. A water-logged situation is not,
however, essential, unless the soil is sand or gravel, as in general no advantage results from an
increase in moisture content above about 15 to 20 percent. Care should be taken to avoid a site
kept moist by water flowing over it (for example, the bed of a stream) as the beneficial salts may
be entirely removed from the soil in such situations.

PAGE R3 OF R16
REPORT ON EARTH RESISTIVITY TESTS FOR EARTHING PURPOSE IN PROJECT
“GEO-TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR INSTALLATION OF THIRD LADLE
FURNACE IN SECONDAY REFINING UNIT AT ISP, BURNPUR”
1.4 Where building has taken place, the site conditions may be altered by disturbance of the local
stratification and natural geological formation when the electrodes have to be installed in this
disturbed area. If a cut and fill exercise has been carried out then the top layer may be similar to
the natural formation but increased in depth, whether it is good or bad in terms of resistivity. If an
imported fill exercise has been carried out, the conditions of the upper layers may be altered
considerably. In these cases, deeper driving of the electrode may be necessary to reach layers
of reasonable resistivity and also to reach stable ground, such that the value of the electrode
resistance remains stable if the top layers of the ground dry out.

1.5 Soil treatment to improve earth electrode contact resistance may be applied in special or
difficult locations, but migration and leaching of applied chemicals over a period of time reduces
the efficiency of the system progressively, requiring constant monitoring and replacement of the
additives. Ecological considerations are inherent before such treatment is commenced and any
deleterious effect upon electrode material has to be taken into account. However, for some
temporary electrical installations in areas of high ground resistivity, this may be the most economic
method for obtaining satisfactory earth contact over a short period of working. If a greater degree
of permanence is envisaged, earth electrodes packaged in material such as bentonite are
preferable. Bentonite or similar material may be used to advantage in rocky terrain. Where holes
are bored for the insertion of vertical electrodes or where strip electrodes are laid radially under
shallow areas of low resistivity overlaying rock strata, bentonite packing will increase the contact
efficiency with the general mass of ground.

1.6 Effect of Moisture Content on Earth Resistivity: Moisture content is one of the controlling
factors in earth resistivity. Figure 9 shows the variation of resistivity of red clay soil with percentage
of moisture. The moisture content is expressed in percent by weight of the dry soil. Dry earth
weighs about 1 440 kg per cubic metre and thus 10 percent moisture content is equivalent to 144
kg of water per cubic metre of dry soil. It will be seen from Fig. 9 that above about 20 percent
moisture, the resistivity is very little affected, while below 20 percent the resistivity increases very
abruptly with the decrease in moisture content. A difference of a few percent moisture will
therefore, make a very marked difference in the effectiveness of earth connection if the moisture
content falls below 20 percent. The normal moisture content of soils ranges from 10 percent in
dry seasons to 35 percent in wet seasons, and an approximate average may be perhaps 16 to
18 percent. It should be recognized, however, that moisture alone is not the predominant factor
in the low resistivity of soils; for example, earth electrodes driven directly in the beds of rivers or

PAGE R4 OF R16
REPORT ON EARTH RESISTIVITY TESTS FOR EARTHING PURPOSE IN PROJECT
“GEO-TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR INSTALLATION OF THIRD LADLE
FURNACE IN SECONDAY REFINING UNIT AT ISP, BURNPUR”
mountain streams may present very high resistance to earth. If the water is relatively pure, it will
be high resistivity and unless the soil contains sufficient natural elements to form a conducting
electrolyte, the abundance of water will not provide the soil with adequate conductivity. The value
of high moisture content in soils is advantageous in increasing the solubility of existing natural
elements in the soil, and in providing for the solubility of ingredients which may be artificially
introduced to improve the soil conductivity.

1.7 Effect of Temperature on Earth Resistance: The temperature coefficient of resistivity for
soil is negative, but is negligible for temperatures above freezing point. At about 20°C, the
resistivity change is about 9 percent per degree Celsius. Below 0°C the water in the soil begins
to freeze and introduces a tremendous increase in the temperature coefficient, so that as the
temperature becomes lower the resistivity rises enormously. It is, therefore, recommended that
in areas where the temperature is expected to be quite low, the earth electrodes should be
installed well below the frost line. Where winter seasons are severe, this may be about 2 metres
below the surface, whereas in mild climates the frost may penetrate only a few centimetres or
perhaps the ground may not freeze at all. Earth electrodes which are not driven below the first
depth may have a very great variation in resistance throughout the seasons of the year. Even
when driven below the frost line, there is some variation, because the upper soil, when frozen,
presents a decided increase in soil resistivity and has the effect of shortening the active length of
electrode in contact with soil of normal resistivity.

1.8 Artificial Treatment of Soil: Multiple rods, even in large number, may sometime fail to
produce an adequately low resistance to earth. This condition arises in installations involving soils
of high resistivity. The alternative is to reduce the resistivity of the soil immediately surrounding
the earth electrode. To reduce the soil resistivity, it is necessary to dissolve in the moisture,
normally contained in the soil, some substance which is highly conductive in its water solution.
The most commonly used substances are sodium chloride (Nacl), also known as common salt,
calcium chloride (CaCl2), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), copper sulphate (CuSO4), salt, and soft
coke, and salt and charcoal in suitable proportions.

1.8.1 With average or high moisture content, these agents form a conducting electrolyte
throughout a wide region surrounding the earth electrode. Approximately 90 percent of the
resistance between a driven rod and earth lies within a radius of about two metres from the rod.
This should be kept in mind when applying the agents for artificial treatment of soil. The simplest

PAGE R5 OF R16
REPORT ON EARTH RESISTIVITY TESTS FOR EARTHING PURPOSE IN PROJECT

FURNACE IN SECONDAY REFINING UNIT AT ISP, BURNPUR”
application is by excavating a shallow basin around the top of the rod, one metre in diameter and
about 30 cm deep, and applying the artificial agent in this basin. The basin should subsequently
be filled several times with water, which should be allowed each time to soak into the ground,
thus carrying the artificial treatment, in electrolyte form, to considerable depths and allowing the
artificial agent to become diffused throughout the greater part of the effective cylinder of earth
surrounding the driven rod.

FIG. 9 VARIATION OF SOIL RESISTIVITY WITH MOISTURE CONTENT

1.8.2 The reduction in soil resistivity effected by salt is shown by the curve in Fig. 10. The salt
content is expressed in percent by weight of the contained moisture. It will be noted that the curve
flattens off at about 5 percent salt content and a further increase in salt gives but little decrease
in the soil resistivity. The effect of salt will be different for different kinds of soil and for various

REPORT ON EARTH RESISTIVITY TESTS FOR EARTHING PURPOSE IN PROJECT
“GEO-TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR INSTALLATION OF THIRD LADLE
FURNACE IN SECONDAY REFINING UNIT AT ISP, BURNPUR”
moisture contents but the curve will convey an idea of how the soil conductivity can be improved.
Decreasing the soil resistivity causes a corresponding decrease in the resistance of a driven earth
electrode.

FIG. 10 VARIATION OF SOIL RESISTIVITY WITH SALT (Nacl) CONTENT, CLAY SOIL
HAVING 3 PERCENT MOISTURE

1.8.3 In close texture soils, the artificial treatment may be effective over a period of many years.
However, it is recommended that annual or biannual measurements of earth resistivity should be
made to find out if additional treatment is needed.
1.8.4 In using artificial treatment, the possible corrosive effect of the salt on the driven rods and
connections should be considered. The possible contamination of the domestic water supply
should also be considered.

METHOD: -
Wenner's four electrode method is recommended for these types of field investigations. In this
method, four electrodes are driven in to the earth along a straight line at equal intervals. A
current i is passed through the two outer electrodes and the earth and the voltage difference V
observed between the two inner Electrodes. The current i flowing into the earth produces an
electric field proportional to its density and to the resistivity of the soil. The voltage V measured
between the inner electrodes is, therefore proportional to the field. Consequently, the resistivity
will be proportional to the ratio of the voltage to current.

❖ About The ISP Burnpur Steel Plant:-

The Indian Iron & Steel Company (IISCO), a SAIL subsidiary, was amalgamated with
SAIL on 16th February 2006 and renamed IISCO Steel Plant (ISP). This full-fledged
integrated steel plant is one of India’s oldest. Established as an industrial enterprise in
1918, IISCO produced iron from an open-top blast furnace at Hirapur (later to be called
Burnpur) in West Bengal for the first time in 1922. The plant was progressively
upgraded to a capacity for production of 4.26 lakh tonnes of saleable steel and 2.54
lakh tonnes of pig iron annually. The plant manufactures a range of products, over
some of which it holds exclusive market dominance. Iron & steel produced by it has
been acknowledged as being of the finest quality. After undergoing a modernisation-
cum-expansion programme, the crude steel capacity of the plant has been raised to 2.5
million tons per year.
IISCO Steel Plant is certified with ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS)
in three functions- Works, Personnel & Administration and Town Services Department;
ISO 14001:2015 Environment Management System (EMS) and ISO 45001: 2018
Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OH&SMS). Over the years,
these systems have become important pillars in the progress path of ISP.

The project site is located within the Township as well as inside the Burnpur works,
Sudivision-Asansol, District-Burdwan, West Bengal at a distance of about 200 km
North-West of Kolkata on Howrah-Delhi rail route and by the side of G.T. Road (NH2).
The site is easily accessible by road andrail.

AND UNDERGROUND MAPPING AT SAIL-ISP Burnpur.

❖ Purpose of The Project:

The proposed scheme has been framed to get the details of soil stratification &
location of ground water etc. in addition to chemical properties of soil. The location
of various tests as shown in the drawing are tentative and shall be suitably shifted
at site, if required, to offset any installation / facilities. At the location of boreholes,
inspection pits, 2.5m deep, are to be excavated to ascertain the presence of any
cables / pipelines etc., wherever required. The successful Bidder shall take utmost
care so that these facilities are not damaged in course of boring.

The scope of works includes mobilization of testing equipment at site, including hire
charges, procurement / purchase cost, transportation charges, taxes/duties, setting
up of the equipment, etc. The scope covers procurement and supply of all
consumables, analysis of the data and presenting the results and findings in a
report.

❖ 3.0 Scope of The Work :-

Reconnaissance Survey:-
I. Our survey team along with authorized representative from Engineer-In- Charge
of project initially went to the site on the field for total Site observation to make
a Planning for execution of the total work.

II. Traverse closing survey is done to get the measurement of area with minimum
error.

Details of Survey:-

I. Our survey team has done detail topographic survey with Electronic Total
Station by taking reduce level, Road alignment, Existing drain with Invert level,
other permanent features like Building, Tree, Telephone Pole, Electric pole,
Pavement and temporary features like Hutment, Temporary shed etc.

II. We also make survey by Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Digicat,vLoc3

and Cable Route Tracer CRT-8 for detecting underground utilities, existing

cables, water pipe line and sewerage line to explore tentative location of

underground features in the road side area at proposed site, ISP Burnpur.

S S Solution, Durgapur Page 5

a) Data Analysis and Drawing Preparation:-
With the help of collected data and analyzing, we prepared topographical &
underground utilities drawing with following details:-

I. Downloaded Electronic Total Station data and generated surface for

identifying ground profile of the area and natural slope of terrain.

II. Existing structure and permanent features in and around the proposed area
are identified and described.

III. Excavation soil for finding out the presence of existing cables, pipelines and
service line in presence of Engineer-in charge, ISP Burnpur.

b) Deliverables:-

I. Preparation and submission of all drawings in scale.

II. Detail report including grid markings in the area, complete in all respect.

❖ 4.0 Instruments Used for This Project:-

For Survey work we have used the following instruments as detailed below:

a. Automatic level: A automatic level is an optical

instrument used to establish or verify points in the
same horizontal plane. It is usedin
surveying and building with a vertical staff to
measure height differences and to transfer, measure
and set heights.

S S Solution, Durgapur Page 6

b. Total Station (Leica) with all standard accessories:

Leica Flex Line TS-06 plus is ideal for mid to high accuracy
