BRIDGE,
A MODERN
APPROACH…
Keeping bridge alive is a constant fight and there is no place in
W E LOV E B R I D G E

the world where bridge players are not anxious about the future of our beloved
game. There is always a kind of pessimistic atmosphere, which amplifies this
feeling. I don’t accept it and the time has come to show that bridge can be seen
in a different way, a modern way and more importantly in a real fun way. This is
why we have decided to launch a new modern magazine: BeBRIDGE.
This magazine, we hope, will talk to a vast number of people and will be more
mainstream than others. Many different topics will be addressed but only and
always through a bridge prism.
By the way, the name itself is a message. Being a bridge player is much more
than only playing at the
game, this game is a
passion. Being a bridge
player is a mindset, being
a bridge player is almost
a way of life.
Today, the whole team
is very proud to present
this first opus and we all
hope that you will like it
and continue to read it by
subscribing.

The legendary World chess champion, Emanuel Lasker, was the first to coin the

phrase, “When you see a good move, look for a better one.” In 2017, following the collapse of Bridge
Magazine, I decided it was time to put something back into the game that had been rewarding me
for more than 40 years by introducing the free online publication, A New Bridge Magazine. Two
years later, we witness the launch of another online magazine, one that will revolutionise the way
in which bridge is presented to its ever-increasing online audience.
Make no mistake; playing bridge can seriously affect your life. When the World championships
were located in Maastricht in 2000, the local restaurants, alerted to the invasion of thousands
of players, displayed signs that read, 'Bridge spoken here'. My wife recounts the story of how at
a tender age one of her siblings came in from the garden and attempted to draw the attention
of his mother to the fact that
he had impaled his foot on a
fork only to be told 'Not now
darling, mummy's playing
bridge'. The millions of people
around the world who play
bridge do so with a passion that
is extraordinary, encompassing
the greatest champions, the
stalwarts of your local club
and the unknown thousands
who play every day. As another
legend, the former Liverpool
F.C. manager Bill Shankly might
have said, 'Some people think

death. I assure you, it's much
more serious than that'.
As this new concept that is
BeBRIDGE evolves, we want you to be involved in its development. We stand ready to answer
your questions about every aspect of bridge. Let us know what you think. Send your questions,
your suggestions and your observations to me at: markhortonbebridge@gmail.com
In my home town of Nottingham, there is a statue of Brian Clough, which incorporates some of
his most famous quotations. As he would have said, 'It's too early to say that BeBridge is the best
bridge magazine in the business, but we aim to be the top one'.

The voice is well balanced, relaxed,

Responses 1. Fit bids

After the first two bids, the opening bid

to partners
and the overcall, the offensive side is not
yet defined. The partner of the overcaller
must therefore show their support with
two opposite objectives in mind:

overcall of 1♥ · With a weak hand, bid as high as possible

in order to pre-empt, respecting the rules
of distributional security.

or 1♠ (1 in a major) · With a strong hand, give partner the ne-

cessary information so that they can judge
the offensive potential of the partnership
and, accordingly, stop at a part-score, bid
game or even consider a slam.
With this in mind, there are two principles
that stand out.

the clues
1
During the bidding
a. To justify the transfer over 2NT, the
hand obviously contains five cards in
Spades. But when do you bid Stayman
over 1NT when you have a five-card ALL LEVELS
major? With the "golden misere", which is
used to name a hand that is too strong to
pass after a transfer and a little too weak
to jump to game opposite 1NT. Therefore,
South’s hand includes five Spades and 7-8
points.
b. 4♥ is a splinter and 5♠ after 5♣ denies
a Diamond control. The second sequence
shows that South has an Ace in a major
(2♠), a serious Diamond fit (4♦), no King
(5♣ as an answer to 4NT, King asking,
after the opening bid of 2♦) and the
Diamond Queen because 5♥, the “next
step”, asks for the Queen of trumps.

THE MYSTERIOUS
2
During play
a. Spades are now precisely known:
AJ10xx.
The singleton Heart was already
discovered. The next clues will help you
determine the distribution in the minors.
b. and c. Following with the Club 9
when the Ace is led clearly indicates an
even number of Clubs.
The lead of the Club 8 proves that South
does not have two Clubs (98), but four.
He cannot have 98xx, because he’d play
the 8 on the lead of the Club Ace (the
second best with four cards.) Thus, he
must have a card higher than the nine.
This card cannot be the 10 because he’d
have led the ten with 1098x. It follows
that it must be the Jack because else
South had 9 points or more.

of the 3♣ bid in the pass-out position.
Is it forcing? Does it show five Spades?
Does it deny them? One thing is for sure,
if North has a hand like ♠Axxx ♥xx ♦x
♣QJ9xxx, he cannot find a bid other
than 3♣. Together with that observation
you must consider that this bid is non
forcing and denies five Spades.
The golden rule for balancing bids by
responder is the following: natural bids
(other than reverses and forcing two-
suiters) are competitive. With strong
hands, you must double or cue-bid.
South is right again.

opponents have no fit, he certainly has
some points. But why did he not bid on

swing (4 Hearts for East-West, 5 Clubs

possibility. Therefore, he absolutely has to

some explanation. The cue-bid of 3♣ quantitative because no fit has been
