Approaches to Discourse Analysis
Deborah Schiffrin “Approaches to
Discourse” (1994) singles out 6 major
approaches to discourse:
 The speech act approach;
 Interactional
sociolinguistics;
 The ethnography of
communication;
 Pragmatic approach;
 Conversational analysis;
 Variationists approach.
