Two cards are drawn at random from an ordinary deck of 52 cards. What is the probability that there are no fives?

Let S be a sample space of equally likelyoutcomes, and let event E be a subset of S. Then the probability that event E occurs is given by the
following formula.

n(E)
P(E) =
n(S)

Since the cards are drawn from the deck without replacement the order in which the cards are drawn does notmatter, use combinations to
determine the size of the spaces.

First, findn(S), the size of the sample space. To calculate the number of ways to draw 2 cards from a deck of52, calculate C(52,2).

n(S) = C(52,2) = 1326

Now findn(E), the number of ways to obtain no fives. There are 4 fives in a deck of cards.

Since 4 cards are fives, there are 48 cards that are not fives. Therefore, the probability of getting 2 cards that are not fives is C(48,2).

n(E) = C(48,2) = 1128

n(E) C(48,2)
Thus, the probability of selecting 2 cards that are not fives is P(E) = = .
n(S) C(52,2)

Simplify.

C(48,2) 1128 188

= =
C(52,2) 1326 221

188
The probability is P(E) = .
