4. Give reasons why: [2]
(a) the smell of hot sizzling food reaches you several metres away, but to
get the smell from cold food you have to go close to it.
(b) a crystal of iodine on slow heating in a closed flask, turns into vapour
and fills the entire flask.
6. Arrange the three states of matter on the basis of their decreasing ease
of compressibility. [1]

Answers of Assignment 4
1.
(a) Formation of nitric oxide from nitrogen and oxygen
(b) Dissolving acid in water
(c) Burning of coal
(d) Respiration
2. When a candle burns, some wax melts. On cooling, the wax again
solidifies. This melting of wax is considered as a physical change. A part
of the wax also burns in air to form carbon dioxide and water vapour
along with the evolution of heat and light energy. Thus, burning of wax is
considered as a chemical change.
Another example of physicochemical change is the decomposition of
zinc carbonate with heat. When zinc carbonate is heated, two new

substances zinc oxide and carbon dioxide are formed. This is a chemical
change. However, the zinc oxide changes colour from yellow (when hot)
to white (when cold). This change of colour is a physical change.
3.
(a) Water is never poured on acid to dilute it as large amount of heat is
evolved which changes the poured water to steam. The steam so
formed causes spurting of the acid which can cause burn injuries. So,
dilution is done by pouring the acid on a given amount of water in a
controlled manner by continuous stirring. The evolved heat is
dissipated in the water itself and hence spurting of the acid is
minimized.
(b) During addition of acid to water, constant stirring required, else the
acid being heavier will settle down.
