Attempt any 6 questions

1. Distinguish following terms with examples and figures (attempt any 5 parts) [1×5]
➢ LDPE and HDPE
➢ Number average molecular weight and weight average molecular weight
➢ Glass transition temperature and melting temperature
➢ Metastable and equilibrium
➢ Plastic and elastomer.
➢ Equilibrium cooling and non-equilibrium cooling in phase transformation

2. What is crystallinity, on what principle it is being studied. Mention crystallinity in polymers

and what is the role of cooling on the crystallinity of polymers. Describe briefly the types of
copolymers. [2+2+1]

3. Explain classification of ceramic materials and describe briefly various types of ceramic
materials by their salient features. Describe the roles of polycarbonates and Acryonitrile butadine
styrene (ABS) in 3D printing. [3+2]

4. Describe the need of non-ferrous alloys, what are bearing metals and what type of non-ferrous
alloys are required for its manufacture owing to their properties. Explain the mechanical
properties of ceramic materials owing to their applications. Differentiate briefly SEM, TEM and
SPM. [2+2+1]
5. Explain iron-carbide diagram, cementite phase, and describe how phase transformation gives
different structures. Classify ferrous alloys and briefly describe each type. [3+2]

6. Describe various types of cast iron. Differentiate Hypoeutectoid Alloys and Hypereutectoid

7. What are stress raisers, what role they play in failure of a material and How can they be
eliminated. Discuss mechanical properties of biomaterials. Which type of ceramic material you
would prefer for the manufacture of a chemical reactor and why. [2+1+2]
