Intro: Discussion of what the IRA are, a brief overview of their ideology, and statement of question

(Were the provisional IRA successful in their goals?)

Paragraph 1: Historical context:


Formed in 1919 as a successor to the Irish Volunteers. Aimed at securing freedom from Britain using
armed struggle. Supported by Sinn Fein (Us Ourselves) on the political side, similar to the ANC and
the Spear of The Nation. Anglo-Irish War occurs form 1919-1921 and the IRA are eventually
defeated, and Ireland is now split in to the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland. IRA splits, Micheal
Collins faction supports the treaty, Eamon De Valera doesn’t. Irish Civil War lasts from 1922-23, EDV
capitulates. Organisation declared illegal in ’31 and ’36, but bombings occurred in 1939. During
ww2, the IRA seek the help of Hitler to depose the British. In the 60s, the IRA begin to agitate
tensions in Northern Ireland between the Catholics and Protestants, who were discriminated
against. The IRA forms bands of soldiers to defend Catholic communities. Later, in December 1969,
they split up in to the Official and Provisonal. Provos were violent
