FOUNDATION ON ROCK

Dr. M. R. Sadique
Assistant professor
Zhcet, Aligarh Muslim university

Background

Often the foundations of multi-storyed buildings, bridges and dams are

constructed on rock mass, which is non-homogenious and discontinuous due
to fissures joints, faults and/or bedding planes with varying strength.

For this reason greater degree of conservation is exercised in the estimation of

load carrying capacity and the resulting deformation of rock mass.

Foundation are designed to be safe against these two essential requirement.

Background

Weak rocks, particular decompose granite, Swelling shale, highly jointed

schist or slate required greater attention during field investigation.
When the spacing of joints is very wide [more than 5 times the loaded width ]
the bearing capacity of the individual footing or pile tip may be estimated as
that of an intact rock using the classical theories adopted in the case of soils.
 Heavily fractured rock with close spacing of joints may also be treated as
dense granular mass.
The main problem of rock mass is the collection and testing of large
specimens in the laboratory or in the field to estimate shear strength
parameters, c’ and ɸ or B and α or any other parameters.

Background

When a foundation mass is likely to fail in shear along a combination of two

or three planes of weakness, the stability is assessed by considering the
summation of shear strength to the summation of shear stressed developed
along these planes.
