Consider the following Writing Prompts. Choose TWO from the writing prompts
and write a persuasive essay. Each composition will be rated using the following
modified writing dimensions adapted from Standards for Evaluating Expository
Writing for Advanced Composition (Najimy, 1989), to wit: 1) Content, 2)
Development, 3) Organization, 4) Conventions/Language Use, 5) Grammar and
Usage, 6) Punctuation, 7) Capitalization, and 8) Spelling.
1) Medical researchers, cosmetic companies, and others often perform

experiments on animals. Many people feel that experimentation on animals is
wrong and should be stopped immediately because animals do feel pain, and
there are other alternatives. How do you feel? State your position and explain
your reasons.
Title: Stop Animal Testing
Do you think animal testing should be illegal? What would you do if I sprayed
bleach into your eyes? Would you consider it nothing? Enough animals are dying
and suffering in the wild every day, and you are just here making it worse. Every
year, over 100 million animals are used to be tested on. Animals are being forced to
live in cages for the rest of their lives just so that products made for our comfort can
be tested on them! Imagine yourself being locked inside a small cage or room until
your last day. Animal testing is not worth it as most of the tests fail and each of the
experiments costs a lot of money. Some animals are injected with poison just so we
know that a product is safe. Many animals are used to get tested on and here is a few

of them; Cats, Dogs, Mice, Monkeys, Rabbits, and Guinea pigs. A shampoo is a
product found in every household. Not one. Not Two. But many more! We have a
huge variety of shampoo with different textures and smells and we simply toss them
out when they do not meet our expectations. By supporting the different shampoo
brands, you are supporting animal testing. So, stop for a moment and consider if a
new shampoo is really worth an innocent animal being burned, cut, skinned alive,
and tortured?
And this is to the girls out there, is it really worth blinding a monkey to have the
new mascara? During the research process animals are being killed and harmed,
isn’t killing an animal the same thing as murder? Just imagine these things
happening to your pets. How would that make you feel? Animal testing is inhumane
and it needs to be stopped. If you were to test on an animal the results will not be
accurate, as we all react differently.
Millions of animals are dying every year just so you can be happy, is that what you
want?

2. Good habits improve our physical, emotional, and/or financial health. Select
one of your good habits and write an essay persuading reader to make that
habit a part of their lives.
Title: Why You Should Not Smoke
I am sure that you know that smoking harms your body. Then why do you continue
smoking? Maybe you do it because you haven’t really become conscious about all
the
effects that smoking has. There are a lot of reasons why you shouldn’t smoke. Some
of them are that smoking affects your health, that you spend a lot of money on
cigarettes, and that when you smoke you are not respecting people around you.
The first reason why you shouldn’t smoke is that smoking affects your health. If
you smoke, your physical condition will be negatively affected, so it will be very
difficult for you to succeed in sports. Also, smoking produces lethal diseases like
cancer and reduces the length and quality of your life. Maybe you don’t notice all the
physical effects of smoking immediately, but you surely will be sorry one day.
The second reason why you shouldn’t smoke is because of all the money that
you spend on it. Maybe you start smoking only when someone offers you a cigarette,
but there will be a day when you will feel the need of a cigarette. By this time, you
will

pay whatever to smoke, and each time you will smoke more, so you will spend more
money. All the money you would spend on cigars could have be spent in something
better, don’t you think?
The last reason why you shouldn’t smoke is out of respect for the people around
you. When you smoke, you not only harm yourself, but you also harm all the people
around you. So, you mustn’t be selfish; you should at least avoid smoking in front of
people who don’t smoke. Also, many people don’t like the cigarette’s smell, so they
won’t enjoy your company. Would you like that?
I have said just some reasons of why you shouldn’t smoke, so I hope that now
those of you who smoke are able to think a little and try to make a smart decision. In
addition to all the reasons I’ve said, I would like you to think about how much you
love yourself and then whether you want to continue harming yourself. Think also
about all the people who love you, like your family who doesn’t want to see you
suffering or sick. If you decide to continue smoking, what a pity. But if you decide to
stop smoking, congratulations! Remember that "If you can dream it, you can do it."
