Bend it like Beckham movie

Answer the following questions

1. What does this film tell you about the social construction of gender, race, sexuality, and
disability in American society?

The movie “bend it like Beckham is a clear picture of what goes around in our societies.the

movie is told of an indian girl who has a passion for football but faces many challenges from her

parents as we can see her mother ask her if she knew any family that would accept a daughter

inlaw who cannot make round chapatis but has the ability to kick a football.the words clearly tell
Surname 1

Jess that her role in the society is to cook and look after her husband and that sports aren’t a

womens thing.later on the story changes and we see Jess’s dad taking her to a football match and

allowing her play football at the expense of missing her sisters wedding which was taking place

on the same day.

Bend it like beckham continues to show us how race can affect ones life.a good example is

where Jesss father doesn’t want her to play soccer as she will not be allowed to play with the

other English citizens .he doesn’t want her to play because sometime back when he had come to

England he was good in sports but he was not allowed to play because of being an indian.Jess is

also red carded for fighting on the pitch after an opponent called her “paki”which is a racist

remark.

In the film tony is conflicted about his sexuality as he is attracted towards his own sex, this makes

it hard for him to tell his parents as they would not accept it ,they would claim that’s not the way

an indian man should behave.the movie ends without him telling his parents as he was afraid of

what their reaction would be.

1. Please read this scenario, and answer the questions:

i. What are some of your recommendations to get the athletic department in

compliance?

Due to the school’s sex discrimination of girls playing later after the boys have
finished playing ,I would recommend that they come up with ways to build or
aquire a new training ground for the girls or even let them alternate in the use of
the field so as to ensure no one has been discriminated.

The school should also ensure that they hire a female director so as to enable
them have gender balance ar the top of the management in the sports
department because at the moment they only have a male athletic director.
The gilrs need to play too so the school should ensure that the games are
introduced to the girls so that they don’t feel behind, the games in question
are,basketball,baseball and soccer.

ii. What would you do to negotiate for even more than just the minimum
requirements to achieve compliance?

I would ensure that I discuss with the management of the school about the
importance of having equal rights and priviledges among the students without
discriminating anyone because of their gender.

Bring in more female technitians to help in the revolution of the games would
also be my work to do list.
