List the characteristics that distinguish the four major groups of plants, then
provide an example of a plant within a group.

Bryophytes/ Phylum Bryophyta

 They lack the vascular tissues that can help transport water and nutrients
 Since Bryophytes is a non-vascular plant, they are considered the earliest living
plants on the planet
 Most diverse group of the non-vascular plants with more than 10,000 plant
species
 Considered the simplest among the plant species
 Includes mosses, liverworts, and hornworts

Moss / Bryophyta
Pteridophytes/ Phylum Pteridophyte

 Composed of 12,000 species of true ferns and fern allies

 Are considered as the first plants to evolve on land
 Are seedless plants
 They produce spores located on the underside of their leaves, knows as
sporophylls
 Sex organs are multicellular

Fern / Pteropsida
Gymnosperms

 They do not produce flowers

 Found in colder regions where snowfall occurs
 They develop needle-like leaves
 Seeds are not formed inside a fruit. They are naked
Sago palm/ Cycas revoluta

Angiosperms

 Considered the flowering plants, are the most diverse plant phylum with at least
260,000 living plants species
 The sporophyte is differentiated into stems, roots, and leaves.
 The sporophytes are diploid.
