B. Review

Before we proceed in today’s topic, let’s have a

short review first.
What was our topic last meeting?
Our last topic ma’am is all about types of
resistor.
Very good! What is resistor? Resistor ma’am is an electronic device or
component that used to limit , control, reduce,
or to regulate the flow of electric current
within a circuit.

Excellent! What are the 2 classification of The 2 classification of resistor ma’am are Fixed
resistor? Resistor and Variable resistor.

Good job! What is the difference between fixed Fixed Resistor ma’am are resistors that the
and variable resistor? resistance value cannot be change or
unchangeable. While the variable Resistor are
resistors that the resistance value can be
adjusted or changed.

Very good! What are the 8 types of resistor? The 8 types of resistor are wire wound, film,
carbon composition resistor, resistor in bands,
precision, metal film, slide type, and rotary
type.
Right ! Those are the 8 types of resistor.

D. Unlocking of Difficulties
Here are some words that you may encounter while I’m discussing.
Coding- the process of assigning a code to something for classification or identification.
Multiplier- a number used to multiply another number.
Tolerance- the percentage of error in the resistor's resistance, or how much more or less you can
expect a resistor's actual measured resistance to be from its stated resistance.

E. Presentation / Discussion

RESISTOR COLOR CODING

Our topic for today is all about resistor color
coding.
Have you ever seen resistor colored bands?
No/Yes ma’am
This is what the resistor colored band looks like.
A Resistor color code is used to indicate the
values or functions of resistors. It is uses colored
bands to quickly identify a resistors resistive
value and its percentage of tolerance with the
physical size of the resistor indicating its wattage
rating.
Resistor values are often indicated with color
codes. The four band color code is the most
common variation. These resistors have two
bands for the resistance value, one multiplier and
one tolerance band.

As you can see, we have resistor that have 4

colored bands. This is the most common variation
of resistor.
Color of resistor ma’am
Next picture shows the table of resistor color
coding.
First table indicate what? Value of 1st band

Right! First table is the colors of resistor

Second table is? Value of 2nd band

Yes! Value of 1st band

Third table shows the? Fourth is the multiplier

Good job! Value of 2nd band Tolerance ma’am

Fourth is the ?
And last table is ?
Very good!
The first two bands always denote the first two
digits of the resistance value in ohms. On a three
or four-band resistor, the third band represents
the multiplier. This multiplier will basically shift
your decimal place around to change your value
from mega ohms to milliohms and anywhere in
between. The fourth color band signifies
tolerance. Keep in mind that if this band is
absent and you are looking at a three-band
resistor, the default tolerance is ±20%.
How to read Resistor Color Code?
1. To read them, hold the resistor such that
the tolerance band is on your right. The
tolerance band is usually gold or silver in
color and is placed a little further away
from the other bands.
2. Starting from your left, note down all the
colors of the bands and write them down
in sequence.

How do we get the over-all value of resistor? So

here’s the example.
I have here the 4 Bands Resistor Color Code.

Steps:
1. Write the colored bands starting from
your left.
Colors: Green-Red-Blue-Gold
2. Identify the value of each colors.
Green - Red – Blue - Gold
5 2 1M +-5%
3. Combine the value of 1st and 2nd band
52 1M +-5%

4. Multiply the combine value by the

multiplier to get the resistance value of
the resistor.
52 x 1M +-5%
52 x 1M = 52M Ohms +-5%. So the
resistance value is 52M Ohms.

5. Copy or bring down the tolerance. The

over-all value and answer will be look like
this.
52M Ohms +-5%

B. Analysis

1. Why do we need to get the over-all value We need to get the overall value of the resistor
of resistor? to know its capacity before putting it in a
circuit or component.

Colored bands quickly identify a resistors

2. What is the significance of the colored resistive value and its percentage of tolerance
bands on resistor? with the physical size of the resistor indicating
its wattage rating.

C. Application

1. How do we get the over-all value of You need to memorized first the value of each
resistor? color from 1st band up to 4th band. Then
combined the 1st band and 2nd band based on
the given color. After you combined the 2
value, multiply it to the multiplier and that’s
the resistance value. Then copy or bring down
the numerical value of given color in tolerance.
