RESISTORS

Basic Electronics: Lessons

OBJECTIVES
• Identify and classify Resistors
based on their specification.

• Identify resistors value based

on colour code and power
rating.
OBJECTIVES
• Describe the function of
the different types of
resistor
RESISTANCE
 Opposition to the flow of current.

Resistor
• A device with known value of
resistance
• Its main function is to reduce voltage
and to limit the flow of current in a
circuit.

Fixed Resistors

Variable Resistors

Wire Wound Resistor
Wire Wound Resistor
VARIABLE RESISTOR
• Variable resistor are used when it is necessary
to change the amount of resistance in the
circuit.

Types
• Potentiometer – made of carbon resistive
element
• Rheostat – made of resistance wire
POTENTIOMETER
• A Potentiometer is commonly used as control
device.
• Used to vary the voltage applied to a certain
circuit such as in the amplifier, television, and
different kinds of meter circuit.

RHEOSTAT
RESISTOR POWER RATING
• Power rating of resistor changes with their
sizes, the bigger the resistor the greater the
wattages and the smaller the resistor the
lesser the wattage.

Power = Voltage x Current = Watts
