(PASSAGE B)
Power of the Wind
The world‛s population never ceases to increase and undoubtedly in the next
few years it will run out of oil and coal which are essential in producing energy for
electricity. Annually, the world consumes 35 billions of barrels of oil and this massive
amount of fossil fuel gradually pollutes the earth. On a lighter note, we have an abundant
supply of wind which could produce energy. Harnessing wind energy is advantageous
because its supply is limitless and free, it is renewable and a natural way to provide energy
to the world.
The wind, as a natural resource generates kinetic energy that could produce
35 times more electricity that humanity needs each day. Different from coal and oil, the
wind source is totally available every day. The incredible amount of wind energy can be
harnessed through the construction of wind turbines and its basic principle is simple. A
series of blades that are mounted around a router catch and transform its kinetic energy
into rotational energy. The wind turbine blades which are made of fiber glasses and resin
layers are durable enough to operate amid rains, thunderstorms, and scorching sunlight
over 20 years. The aerodynamic blades can best capture the wind in a windy environment
and the wind speed typically increases the higher into the atmosphere, so these days wind
turbines are constructed over 100 meters tall with equally large router diameters. The
higher and larger the turbines are built the greater winds it can capture that could
generate enough electricity to power homes in a community. This conversion from wind to
rotational energy has catapulted wind turbines into an important source of electricity.
Although there is a mathematical limit to how much wind the wind turbines
can convert into electricity, these gigantic and modern inventions have made energy the
most efficient and inexpensive source of electricity. Wind turbines have already provided
essential energy in communities across the world. With constant upgrading and wind
forecasting electrical grid infrastructure and energy storage, wind power can be the
answer to the world‛s never- ending quest for clean, limitless, and renewable source of
electricity.

D. Harness the wind, renewable energy that is abundantly available
5. Why is it important for man to harness the wind through the windmills?
A. To avoid the massive impact of climate change by using of natural
resources
B. To lessen the use of fossil fuels that are considered pollutants.
C. To produce rotational energy for electricity production.
D. To take advantage of the limitless and free supply of renewable
energy
