1. Definition
A kick is a flow of formation
fluid (liquid or gas) into the
wellbore when the
formation pressure is higher
than the pressure of drilling
mud.

This flow must be controlled

quickly, a blowout
(complete loss of well
control) can result.

2. Kick Prediction Rules
The chances of missing a kick (or any other unsafe drilling
condition) will be much less if the simple rules listed below are
followed:
 Set alarms on all pressure or safety – related drilling parameters.
 Regardless of other duties, make a visual inspection of the displayed or
charted values every few minutes.
 Check sensor operation at least once per tour/shift.
 If a sensor or instrument malfunctions, repair or replace it as soon as
possible.
 Advise drilling personnel when a sensor or instrument has failed; do not
try to cover up the failure.

9. Kick with Potential Blow Out
A potential blow out situation may include:
 Kick with high pressure approaching pressure limits of equipment or
formation.
 Kick in a combination of losses.
 Kick in combination with malfunctioning pressure control equipment.
 Kick with pipe off bottom.

10. When a Kick or Blowout Occurs
Well Kick
Once the well has kicked following courses of action will be taken:
• Pressure Engineer (PE) as the crew leader is to alert the Mud Logging crew (such Mud Logger,
Sample Catcher, and Technician) to be ready with his/her PPE while waiting for the further
instruction from Driller / Tool Pusher / Company Man.
• Do not stay in the Zone-1 area (such as Rig Floor, Mud Flowline, Shaker) in order to avoid any
toxic gasses, but keep staying in the Unit.
• Keep monitoring the well data recorded especially the SPP, mudflow out, pit volume, hydrocarbon
gas, and toxic gas (H2S, CO2).
• The emergency situation will be ended by the client drilling task force commander (Company Man /
Tool Pusher) when:
• The influx is found not to contain H2S.
• Primary well control has been regained.
• Mud Logging Crew back to normal working by continuing well control monitoring.

10. When a Kick or Blowout Occurs (cont’d)
Well Potential Blow Out
Once the well has kicked with potential blow out following courses of action will be taken:
• Pressure Engineer (PE) as the crew leader is to alert the Mud Logging crew (such Mud Logger, Sample
Catcher, and Technician) to be ready with his/her PPE while waiting for the further instruction from
Driller / Tool Pusher / Company Man for evacuation. Do not stay in the Zone-1 area (such as Rig Floor,
Mud Flowline, Shaker) in order to avoid any toxic gasses, but keep staying in the Unit.
• Keep monitoring the well data recorded especially SPP, mudflow out, hydrocarbon gas and toxic gas
(H2S, CO2).
• Collect all data possible, to complete well control sheets. PE, assisted by ML, immediately prepared
the main computer (hard disk) which contained all the Well Data for safekeeping and taken out of the
Unit when receiving instructions from Driller / Tool Pusher / Company Man for evacuation.
• Once receiving the instruction from Driller / Tool Pusher / Company Man for evacuation, all personnel
must leave the Unit immediately to the upwind safe assembly points. Before leaving the Unit, PE must
shut down the UPS and electric system by pushing the emergency shut down button.

10. When a Kick or Blowout Occurs (cont’d)
Well Blow Out
Considering that a blowout is occurring or has occurred, the courses of action will be as
follows:
• The mud logging personnel shall be evacuated as an immediate action for safety of
personnel to the upwind safe assembly points.
• Before exiting the Unit, collect all data possible instinctively (such as hard disk or main
computer), then turn off the UPS, and push the emergency shut down button to turn off the main
Unit power.
• A head count shall be carried out once the personnel have reached a safe distance.
• First aid shall be given to the injured without delay at the assembly point area.
