Cashier

Reports To

The cashier will report to the manager.

Job Overview

A cashier is a retail professional who scans items to ensure price and quantities are correct,
assists those who need help or advice on products, and handles returns and exchanges when
necessary.

A cashier is responsible for processing cash, debit, and check transactions using a cash register
or other point-of –sale system in a retail environment.

A cashier has a key characteristics and qualities to help them excel at both the customer service
and transactional aspects of their position.

A cashier is responsible for maintaining positive impressions for the companies they work for.

Main Duties/ Responsibilities

● Manage transactions with customers using cash registers


● Scan goods and ensure pricing is accurate
● Collect payments whether in cash or credit
● Issue receipts, refunds, change or tickets
● Redeem stamps and coupons
● Cross-sell products and introduce new ones
● Resolve customer complaints, guide them and provide relevant information
● Greet customers when entering or leaving the store
● Maintain clean and tidy checkout areas
● Track transactions on balance sheets and report any discrepancies
● Bag, box, or gift-wrap packages
● Handle merchandise returns an exchanges

Qualifications (Skills, Experience, Competencies)

● High school diploma or equivalent


● Customer service or cashier experience
● Familiarity with electronic equipment, like cash register and POS
● Ability to handle transactions accurately and responsibly
● High level of energy with strong customer service skills
● Basic math and computer skills.
● Ability to stand, walk, lift heavy items, and work with other team members in a fast-
paced environment to provide excellent service
● Attention to detail
● Strong communication and time management skills
● Helpful, courteous approach to resolving complaints.
