Defense mechanisms are behaviors people use to separate themselves from unpleasant
events, actions, or thoughts. These psychological strategies may help people put distance
between themselves and threats or unwanted feelings, such as guilt or shame.

Using your own words, clearly explain and give a comprehensive situation about what is meant
for each defense mechanism given.

Part I
1. Displacement

Displacement tells us how an individual reacts to a situation and directly open up their
feeling to someone who doesn’t feel threatened at all. A perfect example of this kind of
situation is that when you have a fight and misunderstanding with your family, instead of
arguing and raising your words to them, you share it with your trusted friend and to someone
who will not feel threatened. Another one, for example, at work, instead of making an
argument with the boss, you manage to target your emotions towards your co-worker who you
think you can lean on.

2. Sublimation

Vice versa, sublimation now talks about a person that the target of their feelings are
objects Rather than shouting and making a scene to other people, you manage to rely on hitting
things. I always feel this situation since I have short patience and am grumpy. Especially at
work, you cannot avoid rude customers even though you treat them with kindness and respect.
Based on my experience, instead of defending myself and arguing about this, I hit some objects
inside the store to reduce my anger.

3. Reaction formation

Reaction formation talks about a person who expresses feelings in a positive way. We cannot
avoid people who underestimate our ability and potential. Someone will drag you down and
talk bad things around your back. With kind of situation, instead of making an argument, I tend
to understand and acquire it positively. Because why waste your time with those kinds of
negative people? Just enjoy life and take that as a motivation to prove and show them your
ability that they are blind at. Show them the positive way of your and clear their negative
minds.

4. Denial

Denial tells us about a person who refuses to accept facts and reality. Just like, for
example, let's relate it with people who are experiencing anxiety; they tend to deny their real
feelings instead of sharing them with other people. They will say that they're okay even though
something is killing them inside. They are in denial of the fact that they doubt something. You
cannot avoid reality and consequences that might cause an emotional impact. Learn how to
deal with truth and reality.

Part II. Stress Management Techniques

Give two (2) stress management techniques and briefly discuss them.

Self-awareness talks about the way you take control about your emotions or behavior.
In life, no one can understand you but yourself. No one can drag you down if you believe in
yourself. Take control over your feelings. Leave something that will make your mind unhealthy
and stay to whatever makes your heart and mind grow. Be mindful and stay focused on your
surroundings; always control your feelings and consider people towards your actions if
necessary. Self-awareness is the very first step; you need to understand yourself first to
understand others.

Sounds and songs

Academic stress was hitting my mental health so much to the point that I felt like my
mind was always full of thoughts. For me, listening to music was one of the ways to reduce
stress. Sing along with the song until you feel the joy and make your heart flattered. When my
thoughts occupy my mind, I always listen to worship songs, which indeed cleanses and calms
my mind. Put your headphones on, volume up, close your eyes and feel the song passes
through your ears. Feel the music that embraces your soul and mind.
