CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The sport of boxing is one of the most dangerous among all combat sports in

the world. We cannot deny the fact that any other combat sports are dangerous most

specially in the sport of MMA. However, what is it that made boxing the most

dangerous of them all? It is because in MMA, fighters have a lot of targets and most

of the time, fights end because of submissions. In other combat sports particularly

MMA, fighters have variety of targets from bottom to the top. While in boxing, the

fighters only have 2 targets which is the head and the body. The aim of the game is to

knock your opponent out cold. We all know that most knockouts end because of the

head shots and we rarely see knockouts caused by body shots. This is the main reason

why boxing is more prone to death than MMA because the main target of boxers is

the head, which contains the brain. Boxing, before, was known the sport of the

baddest men in the planet. It is a sport that every man loves to watch because of the

brutal show of the two fighters showing inside a four-cornered ring. There are fifteen

rounds of nonstop action with 1 minute break in between. But as time goes by, after

years and decades, changes in boxing are becoming more evident than before; rules

have changed, promoters have changed, fighters have changed and coaches as well as

trainers have changed on how they train each boxer. Even the atmosphere of the fight

along with the fans have changed a lot compared before. Because of this, most fight

fans are not entertained anymore aa much as before. Fighters duck and dodge more

often to protect their undefeated records. Unlike before where fighters fight anybody

whom the fans want to see them with. Boxing has already changed and its slowly
dying because of the continual not so good changes. Some of the changes and

adjustments that were made, started in 1982. In 1982, during the year of our late

grandfathers, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini was considered the face of boxing. Six (6)

months after Mancini won his WBA lightweight title, he took on the number 1 ranked

South Korean Duk Koo Kim in a brutal toe to toe battle that sadly became one of

boxing tragedies that changed the sport of boxing forever.

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the difference of boxing in today’s world from the past generations?

2. What is the reason why boxing rounds were lessen from 15 to 12?

3. What are the changes and adjustments which made the sport different than before?

4. How did these changes affect the impact of the sport?

5. What is the difference of the relevance of the sport from today compare to the old

days?

Review of Related Literature

Difference of the sport boxing before from today’s world

From the time of our fathers, the sport of boxing was a lot different than

today’s world. During the reign of old legends like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray

Robinson, Leonard, and Mike Tyson, the maximum rounds that professional

boxers fight through was fifteen 3-minute rounds of boxing match with 1-

minute rounds in between. In this era of the sport, boxing gloves were much

lighter than what we commonly use in today’s world. Modern day boxers have

much more security when it comes to their health. Boxers in today’s world are

more privileged than the older generations because fighters right now are

required to undergo all medical and mental checks before entering the big

stage.

The fight that changed boxing forever

On November 13, 1982, Ray “boom boom” Mancini, who was currently the

reigning WBA lightweight champion of the world, was mandated to defend

his title against the number 1 ranked South Korean boxer named Duk Koo

Kim, contender for the WBA lightweight title that he holds. Broadcasted live,

on CBS in the USA, the fight was scheduled for 15 championship rounds. As

expected, it started at a frantic pace with both men having success fighting toe

to toe giving all the fans what they paid for to see. It was an action-packed

fight from the beginning until the South Korean challenger started to slow

down and in round 14, Mancini landed a devastating straight right cross to the

challenger’s chin putting the South Korean down to the canvas, ending the
fight via knockout in the 14th round of the fight. Moments after the fight, Kim

collapsed into a coma and was rushed in the hospital where he died 5 days

later because of the brain injuries he got from the fight.. Many of the greatest

fights in boxing were contested over 15 rounds before the eventual change

happens. Because of this unfortunate tragedy, boxing commissions were

forced to bring down the boxing rounds from 15 to 12 rounds of match.

Adjustments and changes that were made

From the time of old legends like Muhammad Ali, up until now, a lot of

changes and adjustments were made in the sport of boxing. Rounds were

lessened from 15 to 12 rounds, boxers undergo brain all medical and mental

checks, and this checkup is done both before and right after the fight. Gloves

in today’s world is much more padded and thickened than before. Also,

referees in boxing are now more likely to stop the fight as soon as he sees the

boxer cannot fight back anymore. Unlike before where referees tend to allow

the fight to continue as long as both man are still standing on their feet and

willing to fight until their last breath.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the researcher will talk about and discuss how they gathered all the

necessary data and information that has been used in the study. You will also see here

the types of research design that is used in the study. As well as the sampling

technique, respondents, research instrument and data gathering procedures that was

used for the research.

Research Design

This study is a qualitative type of research that involves no use of computational,

statistical and mathematical tools to derived its result. The study is a historical based

research where it talks more about general information and facts that were based on

the articles and related literatures that were used during the research.

Participants of the study

The participants of this study will be the coaches, professors and student athletes

from Cavite State University's main campus. Participants will be picked according to

their roles and experiences and only those who are knowledgeable about the said

sport.

Sampling Technique

On this study, the researcher will be using non-probability sampling technique. With

this technique, samples will be selected from the population by means of some
systematic way in which every element of the population has a chance of being

included in he sample. The type of probability technique that the researcher will be

using, is the purposive sampling. In purposive sampling, samples will be selected

based on the category of the given topic.

Data to be gathered

The researcher will gather all the information from articles, previous studies,

research, and documentaries. The researcher may conduct survey and interview to

athletes, coaches, professors, that are knowledgeable about the sport.

Statistical treatment

Statistical treatment of data is essential in order to make use of the data in the right

form. Raw data collection is only one aspect of any experiment; the organization of

data is equally important so that appropriate conclusions can be drawn. This is what

statistical treatment of data is all about. On this study, the researcher is going to use

the test of correlation. Correlation is a statistical measure that expresses the extent to

which two variables are linearly related (meaning they change together at a constant

rate). It's a common tool for describing simple relationships without making a

statement about cause and effect.

Ethical Considerations

The Special Issue here has presented insight to a range of methodologies and

methods available, researchers along with details example of its practice. However, in
addition to the importance of selecting an appropriate research methodology and

methods is the importance of the ethical considerations around conducting the

research. In this Special Issue, Danny Clark (2019) highlights some ethical dilemmas

commonly encountered as a boxer, he aforementioned, supporters of the sport would

argue that the degree of criticism levelled at boxing is unfair. However, it is important

to further consider the fundamentals of ethical research involving the human

participants.

Most fight that changed the sport of boxing research involves human

participants; therefore, it is fundamentally important that human research ethics

approval has been obtained. It is important that approval has been gained before the

commencement of data gathering from human participants because human research

ethics committees cannot grant approval for research after the data collection has

begun.
CHAPTER 4

Summary, Findings, Conclusion and Recommendations

This section contains the summary of the study giving emphasis in the

findings, which lead to the conclusion and recommendation.

SUMMARY

This study was conducted in Cavite State University-Main Campus, Indang

Cavite, with a total of fifty respondents of the university from first to fourth year.

Descriptive method was used in this study. The researcher used an open-ended

questionnaire to gather data and information and in order to reveal the relationship of

the variables.

The researchers used the Stratified Sampling to determine the sample size of

50 participants from Cavite State University's main campus. The participants were

selected based on their roles and experiences and were coaches, professors, and

student athletes.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the demographic profile of Cavite

State University-Main Campus' athletes and students, their level of interest and

appreciation for boxing, the diversity of boxing from the latter days to the leading

edge, and suggested coping mechanisms to strengthen boxing during the modern time.

The data was collected through a survey using Google forms and analyzed using

descriptive statistics and thematic analysis.

After administering the questionnaire, the researcher used weighted mean and

that will be used to find out the part of the whole respondents’ assessment based on

the frequency/tally gathered. The ethical considerations for the study included
ensuring that the participants' rights were protected and obtaining their informed

consent.

Summary of Findings

The study aimed to determine the difference between boxing in the past

generations and today's world and the reason behind the reduction of boxing rounds

from 15 to 12. It also aimed to investigate the changes and adjustments made to the

sport and its effect on the sport's impact. The final objective was to determine the

difference in the relevance of the sport today compared to the past.

The results showed that the majority of respondents were aged between 18 to

22 years old, and the majority were male. The majority of respondents (87.8%)

showed interest in boxing, while (78%) of respondents noticed a difference in the

diversity of boxing from the past to the present. Respondents suggested 12 ways to

strengthen boxing in the modern times, such as promotion in modern ways, increasing

moral and financial support, inclusion of entertainment, and continuous training

programs.

CONCLUSION

The study concluded that there is a high level of interest in boxing among the

athletes and students of Cavite State University-Main Campus, and that the diversity

of boxing has changed from the past to the present. The study also revealed the

importance of promoting boxing in modern ways, increasing support for boxers, and

providing continuous training programs.

The study aimed to determine the difference of boxing in today's world from

the past generations and the reason why boxing rounds were decreased from 15 to 12.
The study also aimed to identify the changes and adjustments that made the sport

different and how it affected the impact of the sport. The study also aimed to

determine the difference in the relevance of the sport from today compared to the old

days.

Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that boxing has

undergone significant changes over the years. The number of rounds was decreased

from 15 to 12, which has resulted in more intense and exciting matches. The sport has

also seen the introduction of new rules and regulations, which have made the sport

safer for the boxers and more enjoyable for the audience.

The study also revealed that despite these changes, the relevance of boxing as

a sport has remained relatively unchanged compared to the old days. The sport is still

widely popular and is considered as one of the most exciting and intense forms of

competition. The study also showed that the participants believe that there is still

room for improvement in the sport and that the boxing community should work

together to make the sport even better.

RECOMMENDATIONS

In the light of the findings and conclusion made the following recommendations for

the future research are set forth:

1. Utilization of analogous study for revisions, enhancement, and

development.

2. Comparison of the present study to the future research is necessary.

3. The boxing community should work together to promote the sport and

make it more accessible to a wider audience.

4. The boxing community should continue to focus on improving the safety

of the boxers, while also ensuring that the matches remain exciting and

intense.

5. The boxing community should explore new ways of promoting the sport,

such as through social media and online streaming platforms.

6. The boxing community should encourage more young people to get

involved in the sport and provide them with the resources they need to

succeed. The boxing community should also continue to monitor the

changes in the sport and adjust as necessary to keep the sport relevant and

exciting for all involved.
