I ik we wij
I ‘k * we we
he ‘ie ** they ze
she ze
it ‘t *
* The forms ‘k, ‘t and ‘ie are not correct forms when writing formal letters, but these
forms are used in spoken Dutch and online texts.
** The form ‘ie is only used in the inverse word order (we will talk about it in a later
lesson). it can also be written as -ie or ie added to the verb itself
(ex.: werk ’ie / werktie / werkt-ie)
During the course, the stressed forms will often be used for grammar explanations.
When you hear native speakers, however, you will quickly find out the unstressed form is
generally more used in dialogue.
Also tip for remembering the unstressed forms: the vowel just becomes an uh-sound.
The present tense
The stem
The full verb - en and some extra spelling adjustments.
Those adjustments are removing unnecessary letters and double long vowels which are
shortened. Also stems ending on a z or a v get a s or a f.
ex.:
werken (to work): werken - en => werk
spellen (to spell): spellen - en => spell => spel
spelen (to play): spelen - en => spel => speel
zoeken (to search): zoeken - en => zoek
lezen (to read): lezen - en => lez => leez => lees
schrijven (to write): schrijven - en => schrijv => schrijf
