1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of Study

According to a report by The World Bank, by 2030 an accumulation of 130 million

additional people will face poverty due to climate change. Millions of children face an
increased danger of being victims of violent crime because of climate change's effects on their
livelihoods and the increased struggle for limited resources. If nothing is done about climate
change, droughts will continue to become more severe, land degradation and desertification
will continue to advance at an alarming rate, and the global food problem will become even
more severe. The effects of climate change are having devastating knock-on effects on human
society.

One of the most important problems that people are facing right now is how climate
change is affecting the world. "Climate change" refers to long-term changes in the Earth's
climate, especially rises in average temperatures around the world, as well as the effects these
changes will have on ecosystems, weather patterns, and human cultures. Scientists have
concluded that climate change is almost entirely caused by human actions, such as burning
fossil fuels and cutting down trees, which both release large amounts of greenhouse gases into
the air which act like a blanket to trap heat, the average temperature of the world is rising at a
worrisome rate. This is hurting our environment and our society in a lot of different ways.

1.2 Problem Statement

Human activity, notably the generation of greenhouse gases, is causing the

Earth's climate to change at an alarmingly rapid rate. Climate change's global implications
include increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather, increasing sea levels, and
changed biodiversity patterns. These changes are having a severe impact on human societies
and the natural environment, including food and water shortages, increased population
relocation, and biodiversity loss.

Climate change management is a complicated subject that necessitates action at the

local, national, and international levels and involves a variety of unique aspects. It entails both
reducing greenhouse gas emissions in attempt to slow the rate of climate change and adjusting
to existing changes. Several economic, social, and political factors, such as unequal distribution
of emissions and impacts, competing resource priorities, and diverse opinions on the most
effective climate-change responses, all contribute to the problem's escalation.

1
2.1 Observation and Assessment of Problem

As a country expands, it consumes more energy, resources, and land, which can cause
climate change. A country's development may cause climate change in the following ways,
Firstly, as nations develop economically, they consume more fossil fuels like coal, oil, and
natural gas. These fuels release lots of greenhouse gases. Secondly, industrialization often
involves energy-intensive manufacturing operations that emit greenhouse gases. Thirdly, rapid
urbanisation and development can deforest trees, reducing their ability to absorb carbon
dioxide. This contributes to climate change. It can also convert land for agricultural or urban
usage, which releases carbon dioxide from soil and vegetation. Next Economic growth often
increases demand for transportation, which increases vehicle emissions. Moreover, as nations
develop, individuals consume more goods and services. Manufacturing and transporting these
things can boost greenhouse gas emissions. Due to historical emissions levels, some countries
contribute more to climate change than others. Many developing nations struggle to balance
economic development with climate change adaptation and mitigation. However, all nations
must act together to solve climate change, which is a global concern.

2.2 Conflicts Relevant Between Different Stakeholders to Problem

As we move towards an advancing technology world, developers especially engineer

are demanded to practice professionalism and eco-friendly ethics in developing the world.
However, there are still unresponsible parties which neglect the ethics and practice uncivilised
ethics in conducting the industrial process. As a country expands, it consumes more energy,
resources, and land, which can cause climate change and which the unresponsible parties will
consume extra to gain more illegal profit. Next, as nations develop economically, they consume
more fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. For example, several companies have tried to
implement the electrical-powered vehicle to reduce the consumption of unrenewable natural
resources but somehow people still choose to practice the old ways of using fuel and natural
gases. These fuels release lots of greenhouse gases to the environment which lead to increase
in temperature. Secondly, industrialization often involves energy-intensive manufacturing
operations that emit greenhouse gases. The authorities have mandated the installation of
Continuous Admission Monitoring System in the industrial field to monitor the emission of
waste effluent in the chimney. According to report by Berita Harian on 4th August 2019, director
of Jabatan Alam Sekitar Johor stated that there are many which still have not installed the
equipment. Thirdly, rapid urbanisation and development can deforest trees, reducing their

2
ability to absorb carbon dioxide which contributes to climate change. It can also convert land
for agricultural or urban usage, which releases carbon dioxide from soil and vegetation. Last
but not least, economic growth often increases demand for transportation, which increases
vehicle emissions.

3.0 Engagement with Local Authorities and Community

There is a process that will involve community and industry engagement in relation to
the activities of our designated project. To evaluate the community's concerns in accordance
with industry knowledge, this approach is necessary. Our main focus is to raise awareness
regarding the importance of climate change as a global aspiration to achieve by 2030. This
program activities were taken due to the fact that the level of awareness in the community about
climate change is low. Hence, with the collaboration Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor
(PKNS), we will come up with a program called “Empowering Youth to Tackle Climate
Change” to enhance the comprehensive and awareness concerning the climate change amongst
students.

The main target community in this program are the students of Sekolah Menengah
Kebangsaan Sultan Salahuddin, Shah Alam specifically the students of form 3. The program
will be held at the school for one day with lots of interesting activities such as giving them case
study, creating poster, and presentation with award to the best group. The students will gain
lots of knowledge about causes and effects of climate change toward our earth. With the
presentation slot, it is a measuring key for us to determine the engagement of industry panel
and the community is a success or not.

The collaboration with PKNS will be beneficial for us as they provide the information
and data regarding current issues of climate change. These information and data will be spread
among students and teachers so that they are more aware. Furthermore, with PKNS experiences
in taking care of environment in Selangor will be beneficial to the students as they will learn
about local issues regarding climate change. This specific engagement is crucial because it has
the potential to raise the educational value of program and its results.

4.0 Purpose of ISP, Challenges and Issues Between Standard and Codes of Practice

The purpose of this project is to create awareness about climate change issues we are
facing nowadays. Referring to the United Nations website’s, climate change can be referring
as long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. The impact of climate change has
changed the earth climate’s cycle. Hence this program will benefits students and teachers to
know what the causes and the effect of climate change what we can do about it.

The difficulties and problems encountered in handling this ISP are making sure the
students of form 3 of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Salahuddin, Shah Alam
understands and acknowledges the knowledge of causes and effects of climate change by
information, data and also by observing real-life situations. Another major challenge is the
source of data and information is limited. Not so many organizations in Malaysia focus and
fight on climate change issue. There is a limited campaign materials that can be used to expose
more about climate change to the student. Furthermore, Malaysia government has not yet
release Climate Change Act although it is being drafted since 2022. This act is crucial as the
United Nations emphasize this thing in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that needed to
be achieved by 2023. Other countries also have been releasing an act on climate change.

Despite of Climate Change Act still not released by government, we still have National
Policy on Climate Change that has been released in 2010. The policy statement is to ensure
climate-resilient development to fulfil national aspirations for sustainability. There are three
objectives in the policy which are:

i. Mainstreaming climate change through wise management of resources and

enhanced environmental conservation resulting in strengthened economic
competitiveness and improved quality of life.

4
ii. Integration of responses into national policies, plans and programs to strengthen the
resilience of development from arising and potential impacts of climate change.
iii. Strengthening of institutional and implementation capacity to better harness
opportunities to reduce negative impacts of climate change.

5.0 Initial Stage of Design / Development of Solutions

Towards to create awareness on climate change issues around the globe, our group had
come up to conduct the “Empowering Youth to Tackle Climate Change?” program at a
secondary school which is Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Salahuddin, Shah Alam.
This program consists of various activities that will help to expose the students on climate
change issues.

At the beginning of the program, a rough briefing about the climate change issues
including causes and effects will be held. From this, students will get the views and ideas on
climate change issues and how they can take part as an individual to tackle these matters. After
that, they will be given handouts (case study) on some topics of climate change and will be
divide into group of five to make a poster about climate change. This not only will expose the
students with climate change issues but also can improve their critical thinking and interest on
this topic and environment nurture. Besides, they will gain teamwork and leadership skills.

Next, students will be presenting their poster on climate change topic. From this
activity, students can boost their confident level and learn how to give a good presentation.
These skills are crucial as they grow older and be in industry where a few students nowadays
are not able to talk in front of audiences. Hence, they will have the courage to talk about these
issues to their friends and elderly and the awareness created will spread out. Later, our group
and teachers will evaluate the presentation based on the comprehension, creativeness,
information, and the presentation itself. Lastly, we will hold a quiz (Kahoot) to get the feedback
from the students that are participating in this program. This feedback will reflect their
understanding and knowledge on climate change issues after the program and from this it
reflects the overall effectiveness of our program.

Not only that, but this program also includes 3 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The goals included in this program are goal-4 (Quality education), goal-11 (Sustainable cities
and communities), and goal-13 (Climate change) where it is the main goal of this program.

5
SDGs are important because they provide comprehensive framework for sustainable
development that considers economic, social, and environmental dimensions of development.
Achieving the SDGs is critical for a sustainable future for all, and they apply to all countries,
not just developing nations, with the principle of leaving no one behind.
