This assignment give you the experience of performing an analysis of a company’s external
environment

3. DETAILS OF ASSIGNMENT TASKS

Task 1: Report Writing


Select a Malaysian listed company (other than automotive and aviation industry). Using online
and print resources (e.g. website, brochure, industry research report, annual report, trade
magazine etc) to
a) Write a brief background of this company that includes the following information
The sector/industry company
Company vision, mission, values etc
Latest news/ events of the company (if any)

b) Conduct an analysis on how the external factors influences or affects the company. The
assignment will have a maximum of 12 pages (exclude cover page, index page, reference
page, diagrams, tables and appendices).

General guideline:
Law and regulations: What are some key laws and regulations under which this company and its
industry must operate? Any recent or potential new law and regulations that might impact on the
company?
The economy: How does the state of the economy influence the revenue of the company?
Technology: What new technologies strongly affect the company?
Demographics: What changes in the population might affect the company’s customer base?
Social cultural issues: What changes in society affect the market for the company’s products?
Suppliers: How does your company’s relationship with suppliers affect its profitability?
Competitors: What companies compete with the company you have selected? Do they compete
on price, on quality, or on other factors?
New entrants: Are new competitors to the company likely? Possible?
Substitutes and complements: Is there a threat of substitutes for the industry’s existing products?
Are there complementary products that suggest an opportunity for collaboration?
Customers: What characteristics of the company’s customer base influence the company’s
competitiveness?

Task 2: Presentation
Each group will present their business environment analysis report using presentation slides.
Time allocation is 15 min maximum. The presentation should be professional, including the
dress code of members. Submit a hard copy of your presentation slides prior to your presentation.

4. STRUCTURING AND FORMATTING YOUR SUBMISSION

Your assignment must include, but not limited to the following:

 Times New Roman, 12 font size, 1.5 line spacing.
 Main body should be organised under appropriate headings.
 Tables, diagrams, charts should be labelled.
 Appendices should be numbered and make sure you refer your reader to them as required.
 The page orientation should be ‘portrait’
 Pages should be numbered.
 One sided printing.
 Use Harvard style for citation and referencing.
