ABSTRACT

Background: Postviral olfactory dysfunction is olfactory dysfunction that occur after recovery from
acute upper respitory infection, including COVID-19. This condition appears 30-40% acute upper
respitory infection cases. There are various management, but no gold standard therapy for it.
Olfactory training is suggested as modality because odor simulation could influence regenerative
capacity of olfactory pathway.
Objective: To find effectiveness of olfactory training to improve symptom of patient with postviral
olfactory dysfunction.
Methods: Literature searching was conducted through various database, such as PubMed, Cochrane,
Scopus, ScienceDirect and EBSCOHost accordance with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Selected
article is performed critical appraisal by Rapid Critical Appraisal of Systematic Review and level of
evidence by Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine 2011.
Result: One systematic review and meta-analysis of RCT met inclusion and exclusion criteria. This
article revealed peeled estimate OR 2,77; 95% CI [1,67-4,58] with Z-Score 3,96 (p<0,0001). This
study has very low heterogencity, but not statistically significant (p-0,61).
Conclusion: In patient with postviral olfactory dysfunction olfactory training increases the odd of
olfactory dysfunction improvement 2,77 times than without olfactory training. It is highly
recommended to conduct randomized controlled trial to asses the effectiveness of olfactory training in
LongCOVID patient with olfactory dysfunction.
