Exercise problem from previous class lecture
Find 𝐼𝑜 and using mesh analysis

Ans:𝐼𝑜 = −4 𝐴
Mesh Analysis with current sources
Two Cases to consider

1. Current source exists in only one mesh

2. Current source is exists between two adjacent meshes

Case-1 is easy!

Case-2 requires supermeshes !!

A supermesh results when two adjacent meshes have a common current source (independent or dependent)
between them.
Mesh Analysis with current sources

Example of Case-1 :

𝑖2 = −5 𝐴
Mesh Analysis with current sources

Example of Case-2 : Supermesh!

Mesh Analysis with current sources
Supermesh! Applying KVL in the supermesh:

From inspection or from using KCL:

Ans: 𝑖1 = −3.2 𝐴, 𝑖2 = 2.8 𝐴

Exercise Problem #1

Find the mesh currents from the given circuit:

Ans: 𝑖1 = 4.63 𝐴, 𝑖2 = 0.63 𝐴, 𝑖3 = 1.47 𝐴

Exercise Problem #2

Can you write the mesh

equations?
Exercise Problem #3

Find the labelled branch currents from the given circuit:

Nodal/Mesh analysis?

Which one yields the easiest

route to the solution, i.e. the
least number of unknown
variables ??
