PLUMBING

1. GENERAL

1.01 Scope of Work

The work embraced by this Specification covers the supply, delivery on site,
installation, testing and commissioning of the plumbing and external works of water &
sewerage services. It includes the following components.
a) Plumbing inside Toilet Block (water supply and sewerage)
b) Water Storage tanks, pipe work, fittings and accessories
c) All external services such as
 Water supply system
 Sewerage system

d) Pump
e) Plumbing fixtures
f) Testing and commissioning

1.02 System Description

1.02.1 Sewerage and Drainage Systems.


For external sewerage, the Contractor shall install the complete sewerage and
drainage system including sewer pipes, manholes, septic tank and connection to
street sewer.
For internal wastewater collection, the Contractor will lay waste, soil, vent and roof
drainage pipes. Soil pipes and waste pipes will be laid separately and should not be
connected within the building where possible. Proper vents will be provided. uPVC
pipe will be used for both external and internal sewerage and drainage system.

1.02.2 Plumbing fixtures


The work under this section of the specifications consists of providing all material and
labour for supply and proper installation of plumbing fixtures including wash basins,
water closets, along with all their accessories complete in all respect as shown on the
Drawings and/or as directed by the Engineer

2. PRODUCTS AND STANDARDS.

The following schedule consists of the relevant materials/equipment necessary for


the completion of all plumbing works and standards to which these should confirm.

2.1. Water Supply System

2.01.1 Pipes
a. Galvanized Iron (G.I) pipes.
The galvanized iron pipes shall strictly conform to BS 1387-1967 "medium quality"

threads". All screwed pipes and sockets shall be of wrought iron have BS 1740. A
complete and uniform adherent coating of zinc white will be provided for galvanized iron
pipes and fittings
2.01.2 Check valve
Check valve up to 50mm shall comply with BS 1953 Class 125 or 5154 (M). Check
valve above 50mm shall comply with BS 4090 Class 125 or BS 5153 (M)

2.01.3 Plumbing fixtures

Materials shall conform to the referenced standard specifications and other


provisions stipulated herein. All the material used in the construction shall be new
and unused.
All fixtures shall be of high class quality and finish and shall be of approved
manufacturer. Prior to procurement of the materials, the Contractor shall be required
to prepare and submit to the Engineer for his approval, a complete schedule of
materials to be used in the works together with a list of the names and addresses of
the manufacturers and the trade names of the materials. The schedule shall
include diagrams; drawings and such other technical data as may be required by the
Engineer to satisfy himself as to the suitability, durability, quality and usefulness of
the material to be purchased.
Any changes in the specified materials shall be notified to the Engineer prior to the
construction. The alternative material or equipment will be 1approved by the
Engineer.
Plumbing fixtures shall have smooth impervious surfaces, be free from defects and
concealed fouling surface. They shall be true to line, angles, curves and colour etc.
Normally they shall be of local make and of the best quality available, provided.
All taps and cocks to be installed with plumbing fixtures shall be chrome plated (CP)
and shall be of appropriate class to work without damage or leakage on the specified
pressure of potable water system, which is 30 psi.
When any fixture is provided with an overflow, the waste shall be so arranged that
the standing water in the fixture cannot rise in the over flow when the stopper is
closed or remain in the overflow when the fixture is empty.

a. Wash basins
Wash basin shall be Vitreous China or equivalent and of at least 560 mm x
407 mm size. It shall be installed as a complete unit including 15mm CP for
cold supply 15 mm CP stop-cocks, CP brass chain with 32 mm rubber plug,
CP brass bottle trap for individual wash basin and CP brass P trap for battery
of wash basins as applicable, CP brass strainer, heavy cast iron brackets with
bolts, screws etc. Plastic water inlet connection pipe, CP brass steel waste
outlet and/or waste pipe, joints jointing and sealing material, etc, with all other
minor accessories required to complete the job in all respect.
b. Water closets (European type)
European type water closet of size and manufacture approved by the
Engineer shall meet all the requirements.
Flush tank shall be of low level type, trap shall be cast integral with pan. The
seat shall be of smooth non- combustible non-absorbent materials like
Bakulite and of the open front type fixed to the pan with hinges. The toilet
paper roll holder shall be of CP brass with CP brass with CP brass brackets
and screws etc. and fixed to the wall adjacent to water closet.

The fittings shall also include 15 mm C.P. stopcock, plastic water inlet
connection pipe nuts bolts etc. required for installation.
c. Water closets (Squat type)
The Asiatic type pan shall be of white Virtreous China or approved equivalent
glazed fire clay, stoneware, earthenware, or any other approved non
absorbent material with 100 mm diameter trap of the same material and foot
rest. The surface shall have a glazed finish with minimum of fouling area and
a seal depth greater than 50 mm. The outlet shall be placed well back and the
pan shall be sufficiently long to prevent urine from splashing out. The flushing
water connection shall be from the rear end.
d. Water Mixer
All the taps and cocks shall be of brass, gun metal or other equally suitable
corrosion resisting alloy conforming to BS 1010 and shall be chrome plated.
The nominal size specified shall be the nominal bore of the seating. The area
of the waterway throughout the body shall be not less than the area of a circle
of diameter equal to the nominal size of tap/cock. Washers for water cocks
shall be of specially selected leather, rubber asbestos composition or other
equally suitable material. Every tap/cock shall be tested, complete with its
component parts, to a hydraulic pressure of at least 20 psi. During test it shall
neither leak nor sweat.

2.2. Sewerage and Waste Drainage

2.02.1 Pipes
a. uPVC
Un-plasticized Polyvinyl Chloride Pipe (uPVC) will confirm to BS-4514 and BS 5255
which are used for soil, waste, roof drainage, and external sewerage system and
vent piping.

2.02.2 P-Traps
Made of china clay with glazed layer with stainless steel grating.

2.02.3 Manholes
Manholes will be of Concrete (1:2:4) with cast iron class B 125 lockable cover and
frame in accordance with BS EN 124.

3. INSTALLATION AND EXECUTION


3.01 Water supply system
3.01.1 PPRC pipes
Before installation, the pipe shall be inspected for defects. Material found to be defective
before or after laying shall be replaced with sound material without additional expense
to the Employer

For exposed installation, the system requires compensation for thermal variation. For
this, proper placement of fixed (to restrict unnecessary movements) and sliding clamps

(to allow axial movement without damaging it) in the installation network should be
used.

For concealed installation, pipes can be encased or embedded in walls, concrete and
plaster as with other metal pipes.

a. Cutting of Pipe
This shall be done in a neat and workman-like manner without damage to the
pipe. Unless otherwise authorized by the Engineer or recommended by the
manufacturer, cutting shall be done with a mechanical cutter of approved
type. Wheel cutters shall be used wherever practicable.

b. Jointing of pipe
Pipe jointing will be done with the help of welding machine. Following method
will be used for PPRC pipe jointing.

 Prepare the welding machine by fitting it with the welding dies of the diameters
to be welded.
 Connect the welding machine to a power source. Wait until temperature
reaches 260 °C
 Cut the pipe at right angles to the pipe axis using suitable cutter
 Always remove any burrs or chips by cleaning the cutting area
 Before heating, mark the welding depth on the pipe using a suitable marker
 Without turning insert the end of the pipe into the heating sleeve up to the
marked welding depth and at the same time slide without turning the fitting into
the other side of the heating tool up to the stop
 Leave the pipe and fitting on the heating tool until the heating time is elapsed
(see table below)
 At the end of the heating time, remove the pipe and fitting from the heating toll
and push them immediately into each other up to the mark indicating the
welding depth. At this stage the depth mark will be covered by the welding bead.
During this process, do not rotate the pipe and fitting relative to each other.
 Allow the joint to cool down as per specified cooling time before initiating
installation.

c. Pipe sleeves
Pipe sleeves shall be provided and installed by the Contractor for casting in
where pipes penetrate the concrete structure.

The minimum clearance between the pipe and pipe sleeve shall not be less
than 25mm.

Where sleeves occur in finished spaces, plastic plates secured by screws


shall be provided.

d. Disinfection of pipes
All water supply pipes will be disinfected with chlorinated water having at least
1 mg/L of chlorine after being installed.

3.01.2 Galvanized Iron pipes


Galvanized iron pipes used in Overhead Tank (OHT) will be laid after welding
of puddle collar to avoid leakage as shown on drawings.

3.01.3 Check valve


All check valve will be connected to pipes using appropriate jointing materials
and insure that no leakage exist at the connections.

3.01.4 Pumps
Deep well injector pump will be installed with proper foundation and pump
properly bolted with the foundation.

3.01.5 Plumbing fixtures


Plumbing fixtures shall be installed in a manner to afford easy access for
cleaning. The space between the fixture and the wall shall be closely fitted
and pointed so that there is no chance for dirt or vermin to collect.
When practical, all pipes from fixtures shall be run to the nearest wall.
Where fixture comes in contact with wall and floors, the joint shall be
watertight.
Wall hung fixtures shall be rigidly supported by metal supporting members so
that no strain is transmitted to the connections. Flush tanks and similar
appurtenances shall be secured by approved non-corrosive screws or bolts.
Fixtures shall be set level and in proper alignment with reference to adjacent
walls. No water closet shall be set closer than 400mm from its centre to any
side wall. No urinal shall be set closer than 300mm from its centre to any
side wall or partition neither closer than 600mm centre to centre.
The supply lines or fittings for every plumbing fixture shall be so installed as
to prevent backflow.
All cuttings, making holes etc and making it good shall be included in the
work.

3.01.6 Tube Wells


a. Drilling
The Contractor shall drill each bore hole for water supply wells at the location
established in the field by the Engineer. The Contractor shall prepare the site for
the construction of the tubewell and shall provide for the disposal of water,
cuttings, and refuse from his operations away from the tubewell. The bore hole
shall be drilled by any suitable method (percussion, rotary, reverse rotary) with a
minimum drill bit diameter of 8 inches. The bore holes shall be drilled sufficiently
straight and plumb so that the pump and tubewell casing may be installed
concentric with the hole and within the tolerance specified for the casing.

The Contractor shall be responsible for protecting the tubewells from


contamination by foreign material until the completion of the tubewell. The
Contractor shall bear any expense that may result from damage to any tubewell,
tools, or equipment that may be caused by caving, washing, or other
disturbances within the tubewell.

If in the opinion of the Engineer, it is necessary to discontinue work on any bore


hole because it is out of line more than the amount specified or on account of
jammed tools, caving ground, or because of negligence on the part of the
Contractor, the Contractor shall drill another bore hole at an alternative location
designated by the Engineer. The Contractor will not be entitled to payment for
any work done or materials furnished for bore holes abandoned as a result of
his operation or negligence.

b. Data and records


The Contractor shall keep an accurate drilling log of each bore hole including a
description of all materials encountered and their location in the bore hole.
Representative ditch samples or cuttings of the material penetrated shall be
taken at every 5' interval or at each change in lithology encountered which ever
is less of the bore hole. Special care shall be exercised to determine the
thickness and location of each change in material encountered and to obtain
satisfactory samples. Immediately upon taking each sample, the sample shall
be placed in a plastic or cloth bag, partitioned wooden box or other approved
container, properly marked for identification, and plainly labeled with the depth
of the top and bottom of the section of the bore hole represented. The
containers shall be furnished by the Contractor. The method of obtaining,
processing, and storing the samples will be subject to approval by the Engineer.
The Contractor shall deliver all samples to the Engineer at the site of the tube-
wells, except that when requested to do so by the Engineer, the Contractor shall
deliver specified samples to the Engineer's field office.

In the case of defective or incomplete records the Contractor shall complete the
records at his own expense. All records and data shall be kept by the
Contractor on forms approved by the Engineer. The Contractor shall deliver to
the Engineer the original of all records.

c. Installation of Tubewell casing, blind pipe and strainer


The Contractor shall install the entire casing, blind pipe and strainer as per
drawings. The entire assembly will be straight, plumb, and concentric in the
drilled hole.

The Contractor shall install the pump casing so that the deviation of its axis from
the vertical shall not exceed 4 inches at the bottom of the pump housing casing.
Measurements for determination of verticality and straightness of the pump
housing casing shall be made by the Contractor in the presence of the Engineer
upon completion of the gravel shrouding.

Measurements for determining the deviation of the pump housing casing from
the vertical shall be made by the use of a circular plumb having a minimum
outside diameter of 1 inch less than the inside diameter of the pump housing
casing. The plumb shall have verticality and shall be suspended in the centre of
the pump housing casing from a point 10 ft. above the top of the casing. When
the plumb is lowered to the bottom of the pump housing casing, the line from
which the plumb is suspended shall not deviate from the centre of the pump
housing casing at the top by more than corresponding to at deviation of the
plumb 4 inches at the bottom of the pump housing casing. All deviations shall
refer to a vertical line passing through the centre of the pump housing casing to
the top of the pump housing casing.
Contractor will insure proper jointing of casing, blind and strainer pipe.

d. Pea gravel shrouding


The Contractor may obtain pea gravel from any source or location subject to the
approval of the Engineer provided that the gravel meets the requirements of the
specifications. The Employer will not be responsible for the amount of work
involved or the amount of materials wastage in order to obtain the required
amount of gravel of proper gradation.

The gravel shrouding shall be clean, washed, water worn, hard, well rounded of
siliceous material and without platy particles free from gypsum shale under no
circumstances shall contain >5% calcareous material. The gravel supplied shall
be subject to inspection and screening in the field to ensure proper gradation
suitable to the formation. The gravel shall be reasonably graded and shall
conform to the following requirements:

Gravel shall be placed at constant rate hoppers or other similar devices to


provide a continuous and uniform gravel flow so as to minimize segregation of
particle sizes. When hoppers are used, gravel shall be introduced in the
annular space between the pump-housing and the edge of the hole at two
points located 180 apart

Temporary casing, if used, shall be carefully withdrawn in 6 to 10 ft. interval


during placement of gravel shrouding and the gravel shall be introduced so that
each stage of the hole above bottom of the casing is completely filled before the
casing is withdrawn to the next stage. The process of withdrawing the
temporary casing shall be continued until the bottom of temporary casing is at

least 10 ft above the top of the top most screen. Above this point the temporary
casing shall be removed.

e. Sanitary seal of Tubewell with grouting material

Sanitary seal , from tube well top up to a depth of 30 ft, shall cover providing all
equipment, labour and doing all work required to seal the annular space
between the pump housing casing and the bore hole face by the introduction of
grout as specified herein and on the Drawings according to procedures
approved by the Engineer.

The sanitary seal (grouting material) shall be provided with 1:2 cement sand
mortar. Cement and sand shall conform to the requirements of Section
"CONCRETE".

The grout is placed by being pumped into annular space between bore hole and
casing. Grout shall be placed, from bottom to top, in one continuous operation.
The grout pipe may be slowly raised as the grout is placed but the discharge
end of the grout pipe must be submerged in the emplaced grout at all times until
grouting is completed. The grout pipe shall be maintained full, to the surface, at
all times until the completion of the grouting of the entire specified zone. In the
event of interruption in the grouting operation, the bottom of the pipe should be
raised above the grout level and should not be re-submerged until all air and
water have been displaced from the grout pipe and the pipe flushed clear water.
Curing time before construction may be resumed is minimum of 20 hours.

f. Development and testing of Tubewell


Tubewell will be pumped continuously for 24 hours to produce sand free
water. The contractor shall made all arrangements to pump at least, at a rate
double than the design capacity of Tubewell and dispose of the water in an
appropriate manner. He will arrange all labor and equipment for the testing of
Tube well.

g. Sealing of Tubewell
After completion, the contractor will seal the Tubewell till its use by employing
methods as directed by Engineer in charge.

3.02 Sewerage and drainage system


3.02.1 Waste and soil pipes
All waste and soil pipes inside building will be laid separately having no
connections between them. Solvent cement joint will be used. Both parts that
are to be jointed must be initially cleaned using a priming fluid. After that
apply a coating of solvent cement, using a brush to the inside of socket and
on the spigot, then insert the pipe or fitting spigot fully into the socket.
Remove excess of solvent cement with dry clean cloth. The joint may be
handled after 10 minutes and be commissioned after 24 hours.

3.02.2 Vents
Each toilet will be provided with a vent pipe of diameter as shown in the
drawings. Each vent pipe shall be constructed upwards individually. The top
end of the vent pipe shall terminate at a point as shown in the drawings.

3.02.3 Sewer pipes


Pipe and fittings shall not be stored at a place where they are directly exposed
to sunlight. If pipes and fittings are to be used after quite some time, their
storage under shade is compulsory.

While laying pipe in the trench, the trench bed should be level and clear of any
stones etc.

The sewer pipe at its start should have at least a minimum cover of at least 1 ft.
After wards it should be laid at a gradient as mentioned on the drawings.

Solvent cement joint will be used. Jointing method is same as given in section
3.02.1.

3.02.4 Manholes

Manholes shall be constructed with brick masonry laid in 1:3 cement sand
mortar, built on Class D concrete (1000 psi). The cover slab shall be of Class B
(3000 psi) reinforced cement concrete, fitted with cast iron frame which shall
have reinforced cement concrete cover as shown in the plans. Reinforcement
and concrete shall conform to the requirements of Section "CONCRETE". The
outside and inside of the walls shall be plastered (1/2 inch thick) with 1:3 cement
sand mortar. At the bottom of manholes for sewers, a proper channel shall be
constructed in the whole length of the manhole along the centre line of the
sewers, to lead the sewage from one sewer to the other.

4. TESTS REQUIRED
4.01 Water supply system
4.01.1 PPRC pipe
All the PPRC pipes for water supply laid will be check for any leakage. Leakage
will be checked by the contractor by filling the water supply pipes with water and
testing at a pressure of 30 psi. The test pressure will be maintained for at least
20 minutes. Appearance of any leakage will be marked and repaired by the
contractor.

4.01.2 Pumps
Pumps should be tested before dispatch for delivering desired discharge and
head in the factory premises. The contractor shall produce a certificate by the
manufacturer that bed test has been performed for the pump and is found as
per design requirements.
At site, after installation, the pump will be checked for required discharge and
head.

4.02 Sewerage and drainage system


4.02.1 Waste, soil and sewer pipes and manholes
The contractor will insure that all above pipes are laid at correct grades and
that flow of water is satisfactory through actual demonstration to the Engineer
in charge, after their construction.

Manhole and pipes shall be tested for water tightness by filling with water and
observing for any drop in water level over a period of at least 4 hours.

5. MODE OF PAYMENT
5.01 Water supply system
5.01.1 G.I pipes
Payment will be made for the number of linear feet of pipe work at the Contract
Unit price shall constitute compensation to provide, handle, lay and joint pipes
and leakage testing

5.01.4 Plumbing fixtures

Payment for acceptably measured quantity of Wash Basins, Water Closets,


Stop Cock, , Bib Cock etc. shall be made at the applicable unit rate per
number quoted in the Bill of Quantities and constitute full compensation for all
the works related to the item
5.02 Sewerage and drainage system
5.02.1 uPVC pipes
Measurement will be made for the number of linear feet of pipe acceptably
provided & installed complete in all respects as per relevant Drawings and
specification as directed by the Engineer

5.02.2 P-Traps

5.02.3 Manholes
Payment shall be made for each manhole as a complete unit at the Contract
Unit Price to provide and construct manhole including excavation and
backfilling, covers, plastering, benching and all incidentals related to the item in
accordance with lines and grades as shown in the Drawings or as directed by
the Engineer.
