Question 1. Internal Expanding Brake

An electric scooter is design to have a total mass of 200 kg (see Fig 1(a)). It is design
to be able to stop the scooter from the average velocity of 30 km/hour at a distance
of 10 meter. The wheels have a tire diameter of 16 inch (406 mm). Meanwhile, the
front wheel has a drum brake as shown in Fig 1(b) with the shoe lining width of 18
mm. Consider some following assumptions:
1. Rotational kinetic energy is taken about 5% of the translational kinetic energy.
2. During braking, the weight of motorcycle is distributed as 55% at front wheel
and 45% at rear wheel.
3. Neglect all frictional energy, except for the braking system.
4. Use gravitational acceleration of 9.81 m/s 2 .
Calculate the following parameters:
a) Total braking force and braking torque at front wheel required to stop the
motorcycle. (20%)
b) Draw free body diagram of front brake shoe: upper shoe and bottom shoe
(30%).
c) If the shoe is made of semirigid molded asbestos, determine the actuating
force required for front brake. (40%)
d) Is the material suitable for this application? If not suitable, select the suitable
material from Table 16-3. Explain your reason! (10%)

Question 2. Roller Chain
Design a roller chain drive for a heavily loaded coal conveyor to be driven by a diesel
engine through a mechanical drive. The input speed is 900 rpm and the desired
output speed must be between 230 to 240 rpm. The conveyor requires 15.0 hp.
For a design factor of 1.5 and service factor of 1.3,
(a) Specify a chain ANSI number, lubrication type and sprockets teeth.
(b) Determine the safety factor of your design, estimate the tension in the chain
and the length of chain if C/p is assumed to be 40.
(c) Give some assumptions used in your design.
