Q 1. [10 Marks] The Army is soliciting proposals for the development of truck-launched antitank
missile. Officials are requiring that the automatic sighting mechanism be sufficiently reliable to
guarantee that 95% of the missiles will fall no more than 50ft short of their target or no more
than 50 ft beyond. What is the largest σ compatible with that degree of precision? Assume
that Y , the horizontal distance missile travels is normally distributed with its mean equal to
the length of separation between the truck and the target.

Q 2. [10 Marks] A university professor teaches Statistics to a large class of freshmen. For tests
he uses standardized exams that he knows from past experience produce bell shaped grade
distribution, with a mean of 70 and standard deviation of 12 (total marks 100 ). His philosophy
of grading is to impose standards that will yield in long run 20% A’s 26% B’s, 38% C’s 12%
D’s and 4% F’s. Where should be cutoff be between the A’s and the B 0 s? Between the B’s and
the C’s?

Q 3. [10 Marks] Civil engineers collected data on the amount of salt (tons) used to keep highway
derivable during a snow storm. The amount of salt for n = 30 storms

Construct 95% confidence interval for papulation mean.

Q 4. [10 Marks] Each of 20 science students independently measured the melting point of lead. The
sample mean and sample standard deviation of these measurements were (in degrees centigrade)
330.2 and 15.4, respectively. Construct (a) a 95 percent and (b) a 99 percent confidence interval
estimate of the true melting point of lead.

Q 5. [10 × 6 Marks] Solve Q1 , Q2 , Q3 , Q8 , Q20 , Q21 from text book Exercise 24.3 [Advanced Engi-
neering Mathematics: by E. Kreyszing, 9th Edition Page 1057-1058]
