Chapter 4 and 5 - Qualitative Research - Practical Research 1
Chapter 4 and 5 - Qualitative Research - Practical Research 1
This section discusses and presents the data gathered by observing the
Aglaonema plant. This study seeks to know the changes in the aglaonema plant by
applying a liquid fertilizer made of banana peels.
Theme 1: “Finding the Optimal Formulation: Exploring the Best Composition for
Enhanced Aglaonema Growth and Health”.
Finding the optimal formulation for enhancing Aglaonema growth and health
involves considering factors such as nutrient balance, pH level, organic matter, watering
practices, and environmental conditions. Experimentation, observation, and adjustment
are key elements in this process. By exploring different formulations and closely
monitoring plant responses, gardeners and researchers can determine the best
composition to promote optimal growth, vigour, and overall well-being of Aglaonema
plants. The search for the optimal formulation is an ongoing journey, as insights gained
can contribute to advancements in Aglaonema cultivation and care practices.
The study by (Yuting Wang, 2023) can support this discussion.
Theme 1.1) “The Vital Role of Soil Moisture: Impact of Dry Soil on Leaf Vibrancy
in Plants”.
In the twenty-five percent evaluation, each plant's soil needs some moisture
because, after the evaluation, we observed that the soil was dry, and has an effect on
the vibrancy of each leaf
Soil moisture serves as a primary source of water and nutrients for plants. It
enables the uptake and transportation of essential minerals, supports metabolic
processes, and maintains turgidity in plant cells. Furthermore, soil moisture plays a vital
role in regulating various physiological functions, including photosynthesis, transpiration,
and hormone production. The vital role of soil moisture cannot be overstated when
considering the vibrancy and health of plant leaves. Dry soil disrupts essential
physiological processes, leading to leaf discoloration, wilting, stunted growth, and
increased vulnerability to stressors. By understanding the impact of dry soil on plants,
gardeners, farmers, and horticulturalists can employ effective soil moisture
management strategies to ensure the well-being and vitality of their plants.
The study by Madison Moulton (2022) can support this discussion.
Theme 1.2) “Drought-induced Growth Inhibition: The Impact of Soil Dryness on
Aglaonema Plant Growth”.
We’ve observed that when the soil’s becoming a little bit dry, it slows the growth of
the aglaonema plants. We’ve also noticed that the sunlight affects the leaf of the plant
because it has a brittle-like texture.
Drought-induced growth inhibition is a phenomenon that occurs when aglaonema
plants experience soil dryness, leading to a significant reduction in their growth.
Drought-induced growth inhibition significantly impacts the growth and development of
aglaonema plants when the soil becomes dry. Understanding the physiological and
biochemical responses to soil dryness is crucial for developing effective strategies to
mitigate growth inhibition and optimize aglaonema cultivation practices. By
implementing appropriate water management techniques and exploring drought-tolerant
cultivars, aglaonema growers can minimize the negative effects of soil dryness and
promote healthy and robust plant growth.
The study by Jay Miller (2018) can support this discussion.
One of the advantages that the farmers foresee in this research is that it’s easy
to make since bananas are mostly present everywhere while some farmers perceive it
as a disadvantage because it may lead to slower initial growth rates. This can be
challenging if quick plant establishment or growth is desired.
Ensuring consistent nutrient content in organic banana fertilizer for Aglaonema
plant growth is an interesting theme to discuss. Aglaonema, also known as Chinese
Evergreen, is a popular houseplant known for its attractive foliage. To promote healthy
growth and vibrant leaves, providing the right nutrients is crucial. Using organic
fertilizers, such as banana fertilizer, can be an excellent choice for both environmental
and health reasons. Consistent nutrient content in organic banana fertilizer for
Aglaonema plant growth can be achieved through proper composting, mixing with other
organic materials, regular application, and monitoring plant response. By following these
practices, you can enhance the nutrient availability and overall health of your
Aglaonema plants in an organic and sustainable way.
The study by (Jessie Szalay, 2014) and (Kristi Stone, 2015) can support this
discussion.
Theme 3.3) “Natural and eco-friendly: Farmers appreciate that organic banana
fertilizer is derived from natural sources, promoting environmentally friendly
agricultural practices”.
Farmers perceive that Aglaonema plants grown with organic fertilizers derived
from banana peel have a market advantage. Some consumers prefer plants that are
grown naturally and without the use of synthetic chemicals, making organic-grown
Aglaonema plants more desirable in the market because the use of synthetic fertilizer
on the aglaonema plant can harm the plant if the excessive amount of nutrients are
added to the plant causing the leaves to dry out.
The theme of natural and eco-friendly agricultural practices, particularly the use
of organic banana fertilizer derived from natural sources, is an important and
commendable aspect of sustainable farming. Organic farming methods aim to minimize
the negative impact on the environment while promoting soil health and biodiversity.
The use of organic banana fertilizer derived from natural sources is a valuable practice
for promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices. By adopting organic
farming methods, farmers can contribute to sustainable agriculture, protect the
environment, and produce healthier crops. It is a step towards creating a more
harmonious relationship between agriculture and nature.
This discussion can be supported by the study of (Mohammadi 2006).
The observed increase in height growth can be attributed to the nutrient content
present in fermented banana peel fertilizer. Banana peels are known to contain
essential nutrients such as potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen. Fermentation breaks
down the organic compounds in the peels, making these nutrients more accessible to
the plants. The increased availability of nutrients may have contributed to the enhanced
growth and height development of the Aglaonema plants.
Furthermore, the fermentation process could have played a role in stimulating
plant growth. Fermentation promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms, which
can contribute to improved soil health and nutrient uptake by plants resulting in
increased plant height.
Based on the observation, the banana peel contains essential nutrients for plant
growth with the combination of the fermentation process, the availability of the plant to
growth has increased due to the present nutrient that contributes to the plant resulting in
enhanced growth and improvement of the aglaonema plant
Potassium and pectin are highly concentrated in bananas. We can also get
magnesium, vitamin C, and vitamin B6 from it (Jessie Szalay, 2014). Moreover, banana
peels are also a good source of potassium, and they can be used as a fertilizer for
plants. Specifically, its peels include nutrients such as sulfur, calcium, salt, and, of
course, manganese, which assist plants in initiating the process of photosynthesis.
Banana peels, in layman's terms, offer numerous nutrients that improve plant growth
and productivity, thus keeping your plants healthy (Kristi Stone, 2015).
A study by Hasanah et al. (2020) investigated the effect of banana peel fertilizer
on the growth of Aglaonema plants. The study compared the growth performance of
plants that were fertilized with banana peel extract and those that were fertilized with
conventional chemical fertilizer. The results showed that the plants treated with banana
peel extract had higher growth rates, larger leaf sizes, and more robust root systems
than those treated with chemical fertilizer.
A study by Shahid et al. (2020) investigated the effect of banana peel compost on
the growth of Aglaonema plants. The study found that the plants treated with banana
peel compost had higher growth rates, greater biomass production, and better nutrient
uptake than those treated with conventional chemical fertilizer.
Furthermore, a study by Ahmed et al. (2021) investigated the effect of different
concentrations of banana peel extract on the growth of Aglaonema plants. The study
found that higher concentrations of banana peel extract led to significant improvements
in plant growth, biomass production, and nutrient uptake.
Theme #2: Unveiling the Growth Performance of Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen)
Plants: Insights into Height, Leaf Count, and Leaf Size Dynamics
Through the primary questions and sub-topics in the guiding questions, we’ve
developed these themes."Unveiling the Growth Performance of Aglaonema (Chinese
Evergreen) Plants: Insights into Height, Leaf Count, and Leaf Size Dynamics". This
topic was inspired by the inquiry, "What is the effectiveness of banana peel fertilizer on
the number of leaves?" New leaves have sprouted on aglaonema plants that have been
fertilized with banana peel fertilizer.
When using banana peel fertilizer to nourish aglaonema plant leaves, several
observations can be made. The first is to improve leaf health, aglaonema leaves
nourished with banana peel fertilizer generally exhibit better overall health. They may
appear lusher, with a glossier texture and fewer signs of yellowing or browning. Second,
for enhanced plant growth, banana peel fertilizer provides essential nutrients, such as
potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, which can promote overall plant growth.
Aglaonema plants receiving this fertilizer may exhibit increased stem and root
development, leading to a more robust and healthy plant. Third, increased resistance to
stress, the nutrients present in banana peel fertilizer can boost the aglaonema plant's
resilience to environmental stressors. This may include factors like temperature
fluctuations, inadequate lighting, or suboptimal humidity levels. The plants nourished
with banana peel fertilizer may show better tolerance to such stressors compared to
plants without the fertilizer. Fourth, the slow-release effect, banana peel fertilizer tends
to release nutrients gradually, providing a sustained supply of nourishment to the
aglaonema plant. This slow-release effect can contribute to long-term health and
sustained growth of the plant.
The literature as stated by Madison Moulton (2022) can support the discussion
and the analysis.
Theme #3: The growth of the aglaonema leaves after being nurtured with
fermented banana peel fertilizer
After two to three applications of the liquid organic fertilizer from the banana peels,
the researchers observed how the leaves grew a little larger than the first application of
the fermented fertilizer. The leaves became much healthier and huger than the first
application, hence the researcher constructed the theme “The growth of the aglaonema
leaves after nurtured with fermented banana peel fertilizer”.
Based on the answers, the researchers observed how the leaves of the aglaonema
plants grew larger after applications of the organic banana peel fertilizer, based on the
study the leaves grew because of the contents the organic banana peel provides to the
aglaonema plants.
To support the claims a study by Hasanah et al. (2020) investigated the effect of
banana peel fertilizer on the growth of Aglaonema plants. The study compared the
growth performance of plants that were fertilized with banana peel extract and those
that were fertilized with conventional chemical fertilizer. The results showed that the
plants treated with banana peel extract had higher growth rates, larger leaf sizes, and
more robust root systems than those treated with chemical fertilizer. According to
Madison Moulton (2022) Feed Aglaonemas with a balanced liquid fertilizer with an equal
NPK value, or one slightly higher in nitrogen for strong leaf growth. You can also use a
slow-release fertilizer applied once per season to release nutrients into the soil over
time. Only apply the recommended amount to avoid overfertilizing and damaging the
roots and leaves

Chapter V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION
This chapter presents the summary of the research work undertaken, the
conclusions, and the recommendations made as an outgrowth of this study.
THEME 1: Finding the Optimal Formulation: Exploring the Best Composition for
Enhanced Aglaonema Growth and Health.
The observed increase in height growth of Aglaonema plants can be attributed
to the nutrient content present in fermented banana peel fertilizer. Banana peels contain
essential nutrients such as potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen, and fermentation
breaks down organic compounds, making these nutrients more accessible to plants.
This increased availability of nutrients likely contributed to the enhanced growth and
height development of the plants. Additionally, the fermentation process stimulates the
growth of beneficial microorganisms, which improves soil health and nutrient uptake by
plants, further promoting growth. Overall, the combination of nutrient-rich banana peel
fertilizer and the fermentation process has resulted in improved growth and
development of Aglaonema plants.
CONCLUSION
The researchers were drawn based on the study that:
Based on the results the best formulation is the second formulation or the 50%
formulation.
The aglaonema plant that contains smaller leaves produced more new leaves
Although the best formulation is 50%, the aglaonema plants with the 75%
formulation have grown much taller than the 50%.
Based on the observation, the aglaonema plants with too much exposure to
sunlight become dull and dry.
Based on the farmer’s perception the study needs a more thorough exposure to
field work.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The researchers recommend the following to the future researchers of the same
study:
The researchers recommend the 50% formulation, as it is so far the best
formulation based on the study.
The researchers recommend placing the plant in a cool area wherein it won’t be
exposed to the sun
The farmers can use this as their alternative in using fertilizer.
Future researchers, they can use this research as a reference.
For the teachers handling this subject, they can recommend students to pursue
and develop more research in connection to this study.
