Mean Indicated Pressure: 13 bar Number of turbo charger: 2
Scavenge Air pressure: 2.1 bar Turbine speed: 8000 rpm
Number of propeller blade: 5 Propeller pitch: 0.9 P/D
Ship’s Specific Fuel consumption: 168 g/kwh Propeller system: fixed pitch
Particulars CSR: rating ME 18MW Thrusters: 1 CPP bow thrusters 750kw
Engine Speed: 74 rpm Steering gear: double acting, rotary vane type, IMO model
Electrical power plant:
 two 900kw/440v/60hz DE driven synchronous generators
 one 1200kw/440v/60hz synchronous shaft driven generator
 one 900kw/440v/60hz steam turbine
 one 250kw/440v/60hz emergency generator
The vessel is preparing for departure and an additional generator is required to provide
sufficient power supply to the relevant machineries to ensure safe operation. The chief
Scenario
engineer orders the electrician to start another generator and connect to the switchboard
Description
for parallel running of the two generators.

Initial Vessel is in port, Main engine is in Finished with Engine status, Steering gear No.1 is in
Condition of service, and Boiler is in Automatic mode service. No.1 generator is running at optimum load
the Exercise and No.2 generator unit is on stand-by. Both generators are on auto mode
1. Conduct the briefing.
2. Assign the trainees to an engine room simulator (ERS) station which will be used for the
assessment exercise.
3. Conduct the familiarization in accordance with the familiarization plan for this particular
scenario.
4. Load the assessment scenario to the ERS station where the students are assigned. In case
of any technical difficulty in loading the exercise, call the designated technician for
assistance.
5. Once the exercise is loaded, allow the trainees to prepare the station for the training
Assessor’s
assessment exercise. Maximum 10 minutes shall be given for the preparation. Advise
Action
trainees to report any technical difficulties in setting-up.
6. Once the preparation for the scenario is completed, inform the trainees to stand by for
exercise commencement.
7. Monitor the execution of the exercise from the instructor workstation where the
trainees are observed regarding their performance.
8. Follow the assessment guide in recording the observed behaviors of the trainees which,
will be the basis of the overall performance evaluation and in assessing the trainee’s
competence in the task
9. Conduct the debriefing.

1. Distribute the trainee’s copy of the simulation assessment exercise.

2. State the basis of the exercise, i.e., STCW regulation and/or competence table
3. Discuss the learning outcome of the exercise.
4. Explain the exercise scenario.
5. Discuss the required performance criteria and performance standards in accomplishing
the task at hand.
6. Provide a copy of the ship’s engine room particulars for the trainee’s reference
Exercise
7. Explain the initial condition.
Briefing
8. Discuss the duration of the assessment.
9. Explain the conditions when the assessment will be stopped.
10. Inform the trainees that they will be monitored throughout their execution and that a
debriefing will be held after the exercise.
11. Explain the failure state of the assessment exercise.
12. Ask the trainees to raise any question or clarification before proceeding to the ERS
station
1. Understand the assessment outcomes of the exercise
2. Understand that he/she will be stationed in an engine room simulator to perform a
shipboard task as per the assessment scenario
3. Perform the following tasks:
Trainee’s a. Start standby generator manually from the main switchboard.
Action b. Switch on synchroscope.
c. Synchronize stand-by generator with the generator in service using
synchroscope and governor control.
d. Couple stand-by generator with distribution system by closing ACB
e. Share the load between the two generators.
1. When objective have been accomplished.
2. When any of the following arises during the exercise:
a. Blackout
Exercise b. Deviation from the objective
Stoppage 3. When the following is committed during the exercise:
a. Horse play
b. Unsafe action by the student
4. The exercise will be automatically stopped when exercise exceeds time limit.

1. Explain the purpose of debriefing.

2. Point out the strengths of the trainees’ performance by citing the performance criteria
and the performance standards that they were able to accomplish.
3. Discuss the weaknesses of the trainees’ performance by citing the executions which
didn’t meet the performance standard. Replay the exercise if available.
Debriefing 4. Ask for comments from the trainees and whether they agree with the observations or
findings.
5. In case the is evaluated as “not yet competent” in the performance of the task, give
recommendations how to improve the performance
6. Advise the schedule of resit or re-assessment.
7. Ask for any suggestions to improve the exercise.
