SUBJECT: E-Hydraulics and QD Fittings – Installation of a Ball Type Shut-Off

Valve

MODELS AFFECTED: All Fortis Products and Electric Rider Products with E-
Hydraulics

DESCRIPTION: This Parts-Service Gram replaces Gram JH00046R02H to note that

units equipped with E-hydraulics produced beginning 2/2/2010 have a pressure
relief valve mounted to the mast and do not need the ball valve installation.
Please discard all previous electronic and paper copies of this Gram.

2,000-7,000 LB Products
The QD (quick disconnect) couplings, part numbers 1483663 Socket and 1483664
Nipple, cannot be assembled with residual pressure in the hoses/tubes. Trucks
equipped with an E-hydraulic control valve will maintain a residual hydraulic pressure in
the 3rd & 4th auxiliary function tubes/hoses when the engine is shut off that cannot be
bled off by cycling the hydraulic function levers.

Hyster Company recommends the installation of a ball type shut-off valve, part number
2081418, between one of the attachment hoses and the QD coupling. Only one valve is
required per hydraulic function. The ball type shut-off valve allows isolating the
attachment from the truck hydraulic system during connection/disconnection of the QD
couplings. This will also require a fitting, part number 0016540 and an o-ring, part
number 0016483.

8,000-16,000 LB Products
The QD couplings, part numbers 1377953 Socket and 1377954 Nipple, cannot be
assembled with residual pressure in the hoses/tubes. Trucks equipped with an E-
hydraulic control valve will maintain a residual hydraulic pressure in the 3 rd & 4th
auxiliary function tubes/hoses when the engine is shut off that cannot be bled off by
cycling the hydraulic function levers.

Hyster Company recommends the installation of a ball type shut-off valve, part number
2087565, between one of the attachment hoses and the QD coupling. Only one valve is
required per hydraulic function. The ball type shut-off valve allows isolating the
attachment from the truck hydraulic system during connection/disconnection of the QD
couplings. This will also require a fitting, part number 0016541 and an o-ring, part
number 0016484.

Attachment Connection/Disconnection Sequence after installation of the Ball

Valve

During connection of an attachment the sequence would be as follows for 3 rd function:

 Close the ball type shut-off valve by moving the ball valve lever perpendicular/90
degrees to the hose. Refer to illustrations on page 2.
 Operate the truck hydraulics to remove pressure from the inside QD, hand lever
forward, and connect the inside QD.
 Operate the truck hydraulics to remove pressure from the outside QD, hand lever
rearward/back, and connect the outside QD.
 Open the ball type shut-off valve by moving the lever in line with the hose.

During disconnection of an attachment, the sequence would be the reverse of the

connection for 3rd function - closing the shut-off valve first. Refer to illustrations on page
2.

The sequence for 4th function is he same except forward hand lever motion removes
pressure from the outside QD and rearward hand lever motion removes pressure from
the inside QD.

The photos below provide the location of the shut-off valve and lever position when the
valve is open (picture A) or closed (Picture B).

This issue does not affect the auxiliary tube extensions, units where an
attachment has been plumbed permanently to the truck or trucks that are
equipped with a manual hydraulic control valve.

Units equipped with a manual hydraulic control valve can still use the 1483663/1483664
QD couplings, as any residual pressure in the hoses/tubes can be bled off by cycling
the 3rd & 4th function hydraulic levers with the engine off.

If you have a unit that was ordered with hydraulic quick disconnects from the factory
that has already shipped, or a unit that your dealership plans on installing QD’s on, it will
require this shut-off valve be installed. NOTE: If your dealership or customer plans
on installing QD couplings on trucks equipped with an E-hydraulic control valve,
the QD will not work properly without the shut-off valve installed, regardless of
the type or brand of QD being used.
