The exhibition showcases a series of pithos lids with a hole in the centre,
attesting to the age-old practice of drawing wine from large pithoi with a
siphouni (siphon). The Chian lids, however, are much more widely used and
generally accompany storage pithoi large and small, the hole having lost its
purely practical function and become simply an element of their identity as
ceramic products of the island.
Lids are just one of the many characteristic Chian handmade pottery
products presented in this exhibition. These ceramics, based on the
testimonies themselves and written sources, are dated from the 17th (the
earliest inscribed date is 1643) to the 19th century – their production came
to an end with the Massacre of Chios in 1822. They feature rich and varied
impressed or incised decorative motifs. It is this decoration that links the
post-Byzantine ceramic production of Chios with pottery, particularly lids of
various vessels, of the Early and Middle Byzantine period.
Thus, the exhibition sheds light not only on the technology and aesthetics of
Chian use ware of the later post-Byzantine era, but also on the survival of
elements of the Byzantine period into the following centuries, attesting to
the slow pace of change of ceramic art.
The protection and promotion of modern Greek ceramics has always been
one of the main priorities of the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage.
However, although we were reasonably familiar with the pithos production of
the large potting centres, other aspects of this craft unfortunately remained
obscure.
Nikos Liaros's study on the modern ceramics of Chios now fills one such gap
in research. Interestingly, he does not focus exclusively on the typology and
the chaîne opératoire of these ceramics, as was usually the case with older
studies, but also places them in their historical context. He traces the
complex relationship between socioeconomic practices and artisanal pottery
production, how the former determined the latter and how the latter, with
its possibilities or even its limitations, affected developments in the domain
of customs and the economy.
Technology
These ceramics are handmade (manufactured without using a potter's wheel).
Their technology is extremely simple. The clay fabric is always coarse with
inclusions, the walls thick, the surface rough, the shape often asymmetrical.
They are made using the coil technique. When they bear decoration, it is
always impressed or incised and unpainted. They were fired in one-chamber
kilns, in contact with the logs, which is why they are often blackened and
sometimes warped by the high temperature.
Dating
The handmade ceramics of Chios were based on the technology and
aesthetics of the corresponding Byzantine vessels. The earliest date incised
on a pot is 1643 but the vast majority of ceramics are from the 18th and
early 19th century. They stopped being produced after the Massacre of Chios
in 1822.
Roof tiles
17th- and 18th-century Chian roof tiles are flat and heavy, with incisions to
help the plaster adhere and rainwater run off. These incisions vary, differing
even on the same roof. Some of them may be very abstract representations
of human figures or faces.

Siphounia
The siphouni has been used since antiquity to siphon wine from a pithos. A
pierced reed was fixed in the cylindrical pipe on the side of the vessel. The
end of the reed was then inserted through the hole in the pithos lid and
dipped into the wine. Sucking the air out of the vessel through the small hole
in the top drew up the wine to fill the siphouni. This prevented the wine from
being disturbed and souring.
