Forces in Space (3D)
❑ Force Defined by its Magnitude and Two Points on its Line of Action:
Position vector,
𝑴𝑵 = 𝑥2 − 𝑥1 𝒊 + 𝑦2 − 𝑦1 𝒋 + (𝑧2 − 𝑧1 )𝒌

𝑴𝑵 = 𝑑𝑥 𝒊 + 𝑑𝑦 𝒋 + 𝑑𝑧 𝒌

∴ 𝑀𝑁 = 𝑴𝑵 = 𝑑 = 𝑑𝑥2 + 𝑑𝑦2 + 𝑑𝑧2

Unit vector along MN,
𝑴𝑵 1
𝝀𝑴𝑵 = = (𝑑𝑥 𝒊 + 𝑑𝑦 𝒋 + 𝑑𝑧 𝒌)
𝑴𝑵 𝑑

❑ Problem:
A horizontal circular plate is supported by two springs and a post as shown. Angle
between each of springs AB and AC and post DA is 30°. Tension is 50-lb in AB and 40-lb
in AC. Determine-
a) Magnitude and direction of the resultant of forces exerted by springs on the post at A;
b) The point where resultant intersects the plate.

Ans: 𝑹 = 4.12 i—77.9 j+ 25.8 k

Resultant: 82.2 lb
𝜽𝒙 = 𝟖𝟕. 𝟏°, 𝜽𝒚 = 𝟏𝟔𝟏. 𝟓°, 𝜽𝒛 = 𝟕𝟏. 𝟕°

❑ Problem:
A container of weight W is suspended from ring A. Cable BAC passes through the ring and
is attached to fixed supports at B and C. Two forces P = Pi and Q = Q k are applied to the
ring to maintain the container in the position shown. Knowing that W =3 76 N,
determine P and Q.

❑ Problem:
In trying to move across a slippery icy surface, a 180-lb man uses two ropes AB and AC.
Knowing that the force exerted on the man by the icy surface is perpendicular to that surface,
determine the tension in each rope.

Ans: 𝑻𝑨𝑩 =31.7 lb, 𝑻𝑨𝒄 = 64.3 lb
