Meaning:
1. Base of life: Supporting part of life.
2. Taming animals: Domesticate (Training or teaching animals).
3. Livelihood: Means of earning enough money to live.
4. Shepherd: A person who rears and takes care of sheep.
5. Famine: Extreme scarcity or shortage of food.
6. Endangered: A plant or animal species that is in immediate danger
of becoming extinct and need protection.
7. Pesticides: Chemical substance used for destroying insects or other
organisms.
8. Protection: An act of keeping someone safe from harm or injury.
9. Wild life protection act: An act for protection of plants and animal
species.
10. Bio-diversity: A variety of plants and animals living under one
habitat.

2. Since generations humans have been using animals to fulfil their
various needs.
3. Some animals are used for food, transport, agriculture and fun.
4. Some small creatures like earthworm, spider, ant etc. help the
farmers in agriculture.
5. Government is making laws to protect animals.
6. Some people use animals for their beneficial purpose and ill treat
them to extract more money.
7. Animals and birds should be taken care with love and affection;
proper food should be given to them.
8. Lakes, ponds and rivers should not be polluted as they give shelter
to many animals.
9. The fuels like petrol and coal and pesticides should not be used
indiscriminately as they pollute and harm animals.
10. Trees should not be cut down instead trees should be grown in the
backyard of house, school premises, streets and vacant places.

Q1. Name some animals which help us in earning a livelihood?
A) The animals that help us in earning our livelihood are sheep, goat,
horse, donkey, cow, buffalo, dog, camel, hen, monkey etc.

A) Shepherd wakes up early in the morning. He takes the sheep to the
uplands and returns home in the evening when it gets dark. He carries
the lambs that cannot walk. He walks long distance to graze his sheep.
He protects his sheep from wild animals with the help of a dog.

Q5. Why are earthworms, spiders, and snakes etc., called friends of
farmers?
A) Earthworms: They eat the waste from fields and make the soil
fertile with its excreta. It also allows plants to grow well.
Spiders: Spiders knit the web. The insects and mosquitoes which
harm the crop get stuck in the web. Thus, it protects the crop
from harmful insects.
Snakes: They swallow the rats that eat grains and destroy fields.
Ants: They eat the smaller insects and eggs lying on the plants.
Thus, these animals are called as friends of farmers.

A) 1. Animals are living creature like us.

Questioning – hypothesis

Q) All animals gathered and decided to take up the ‘Movement on


Protecting Animal Rights’. They passed a resolution to question the
people who exploit their rights. Write, what questions the
representatives of Animal Rights Society would ask people.
A) The representative of Animal Rights Society would ask the people
about:
1. Cow: Cows give you milk. But you do not give proper food to
them. Why do you sell them to butcher?

2. Hen: Hen gives you eggs but you kill them for meat. Why do you do
so?

3. Sheep: Sheep gives you wool. Why do you kill them for meat?

4. Dog: Dog guards your house day and night. Even then you don't give
them proper food and you don't allow them to play with their friends.

5. Donkey: They carry heavy loads for you. Why do you force them to
work even when they are not well?

b) Observe the animals in your area which are subjected to violence

A) I observed some animals which are subjected to violence. They are:
1. Dogs: They guard our house day and night but children throw stones
on them and hurt them.
2. Monkeys: Monkeys are caught and taken away by Circus people and
trained to dance, walk on the ropes and ride the bicycle. The owner of
the Circus controls the monkey with a sharp edge stick.
3. Parrot: They are caught and kept in cages by the foretellers.
4. Donkey: They carry heavy loads and are controlled by man with a
stick.
5. Cats: Cats kill mice which eat away our food grains. But we beat them
with sticks and drive them away.
Appreciation

a) How do you feel when you watch animals in the zoo?


A) 1. I feel very happy and excited when I watch the animals in the zoo.
But at the same time I feel very sad and sorry because they do not have
freedom.
2. They are like slaves to the people. It is very bad to take away their
freedom for our selfish motive.
3. Some animals are not taken care properly, they have to live in the
same place till they die.

b) Oxen and bulls work hard the whole year to help in farming. What
benefits do they expect in return? What should we learn from them?
A) Oxen and Bulls work hard the whole year in the fields to produce the
crops. But they get nothing in return except food and water. They also
expect love, affection, care and timely medication when they fall ill.
From animals we need to learn not to be selfish for our needs, to be
obedient, hardworking, to be faithful and help others as they do to the
human beings.
