DISCUSSION / QUESTIONS
1. Explain the function for each of the block used in AM simulation as follows:
a) Signal Generator
- To generate modulating signal
b) DSB AM Modulator Passband
- As a transmitter, it modifies one or more properties of the analog carrier by modulating
signal
c) DSB AM Demodulator Passband
- It converts the modulated carrier back to original information
2. By using the modulating frequency and the carrier frequency values inserted in the Signal
Generator and DSB AM Modulator/Demodulator Passband blocks respectively, calculate:
a) Frequency for upper and lower side band.
b) Bandwidth.
3. By using the values obtained from the Scope and the Spectrum Analyzer, calculate the

4. What will happen if the amplitude of modulating signal is greater than the amplitude of the
carrier signal?

- The modulation index will become greater than 1. This will result in over modulation.

5. Write the complete mathematical expressions/equations for the amplitude modulated wave.

- 𝑉𝑎𝑚(𝑡) = 1.1𝑠𝑖𝑛2𝜋20𝑡 + 0.35𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝜋2000𝑡 − 0.35𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝜋2000𝑡

CONCLUSION
Summarize the main ideas that you have gained from the questions section.

In this experiment, students learned how to observe modulated and demodulated signal of AM. Other
than that, students also learned how to analyze the spectrum of AM in frequency range. Also, students
are exposed to the use of MATLAB and how to make some basic simulations by conducting this
experiment using the software.
