EXPERIMENT 6
PRE-LAB
1. Explain the difference between DC shunt motor and DC compound motor.
DC shunt motor: The field winding is connected in parallel with the armature circuit.
Compound motor: The field winding are connected in series and parallel with the armature circuit.
2. A 500 V-DC compound motor has armature resistance, series field resistance and shunt
field resistance of 0.8 Ω, 1.3 Ω and 150 Ω respectively. The motor`s friction and windage
losses are 230 W. At full load the motor runs at a speed of 1200 rpm with line current of 19

2. Adjust the voltage supply to 220 V. Maintain a constant voltage of 220 V throughout the
experiment.
3. Press the red button M=0 at the control unit.
4. Select torque control mode by pressing mode button on the control unit.
5. Observe the torque panel and record the offset value (if available).
Note: Each DC motor unit has different offset value. This offset value will be the torque
starting value and has to be added for each increment value of the torque in Table 6.1.
6. Adjust the torque from no-load (0 Nm + offset value) to (2 Nm + offset value). Record the
relevant values and complete Table 6.1.

DISCUSSION
1. What is the factor that influences of the increasing load of the DC compound wound
motor speed?
One significant factor is the increasing load on the motor. As the load on the motor increases, the
speed of the motor tends to decrease. This phenomenon is known as speed regulation. The
primary factor that affects the speed of a compound wound DC motor under load is the armature
reaction.
2. How will the armature current and the power output of a DC compound wound motor
change with increasing load?
The power output of a DC compound wound motor may increase initially with increasing load due
to the increase in armature current. However, as the load continues to increase, the decrease in
motor speed will start to offset the increase in armature current, resulting in a decrease in power
output.
3. How will the efficiency of a DC compound motor change within the range of no-load /
rated load?
The efficiency of a DC compound motor is typically low at no load, improves at the rated load, and
may decrease beyond the rated load as losses increase.
CONCLUSION
Conclude the findings and summarize the main ideas that you have gained from this experiment.
In conclusion, This experiment is to determine and to interpret the load characteristics of a DC
compound motor. In summary, a DC compound motor's speed decreases and armature current
increases with increasing load. The power output initially increases but later decreases. Efficiency is
highest at the rated load, but it may decrease under lighter or heavier loads.
