CHAPTER I – INTRODUCTION

 Project Context

The previous switching process of home appliances is

done by manual process. The physically handicap people does
not capable to operate home appliances to on/off the switch
by using their hands. In the normal switch board, People can
struggle to priorities switching because of difficulties and
time consuming.

The home appliances controlled system through voice

command helps for reducing human effort and errors and thus
increasing the efficiency. With the help of the proposed
system, it is intended to control lights and electrical
appliances in a home using voice commands.

 Purpose and Description of the project

This paper details the overall design of a Wireless

Home Automation System. This is fuelled by the need to
provide supporting systems for the elderly and the disabled,
especially those who live alone.

In the proposed system microphone receives voice

command as input to a voice recognition module which
converts the data into a required format to be used in the
microcontroller where the devices are attached to it. Based
on the message it received, it either turns ON/OFF the home
appliances. The users can manipulate appliances anytime,
anywhere, letting our houses become more and more automated
and intelligent.
  Objective of the Project

The main objective of the project is to design a home

appliances controlled system through voice command. This
project will enable the user to control the electrical
appliance in home using their voice as the medium that will
control the power system.

Besides, the proposed system provides user a better

safety against any current leakage by using voice direct
contact with the power source is reduced compare to the
usage of conventional switch.

The other objectives of the proposed system are:

1. To control home appliances by using voice commands.

2. To help the disabled and elderly people.

3. It helps to reduce time consuming.

 Scope and limitation of the project

Scope of the proposed system

In order to achieve the objective of this project, there

are several scope had been identified. The scope of this
project includes the designing of a voice recognition
circuit for the voice recognition purpose. Follow by the
designing of the microcontroller as the hardware that
control the whole project by serving as interface for the
voice recognition board with the electrical appliance. Next,
a programming language is to be design and coded to enable
the microcontroller to be able to function properly as
desired.

Limitation of the proposed system

1. Continuous spoken words cannot be accepted by the system

due to overlapping and hence there needs to be a silence or
pause between two consecutive words. Thus, only isolated
words would be feasible.

2. The system is a speaker dependent system. Too many

speakers speaking simultaneously would result in overlapping
of the signals and interruptions.

3. There is a limitation on vocabulary size as well.

Languages with large vocabulary are difficult for pattern
compared to languages with small vocabulary, since chances
of having ambiguous words are less.

 Significance of the project

The proponents conducted the research in order to promote

and help the following.

Elder. The proposed system will help the elder to control

home appliances effortless.

Disable. The proposed system will help the disabled person

to control home appliances without using their hands.
Home owner. The proposed system will help for reducing home
owner effort and to increase their satisfaction.

House. The system make house become more and more automated
and intelligent.
