1. OBJECTIVES
This procedure provides the guidelines for the inspectors to ensure that the
hardness test method in determining the hardness of metal or weld metal are
carried out in accordance with the standards/specification.
2. SCOPE
This procedure provide the requirements and acceptance standards to
perform hardness test of production welds, hot bend and hot formed piping.
3. PERSONNEL
All persnonnel performing the hardness test should be knowledgeable about
all aspects of operation of hardnes test equipment and method also have
experience in performing hardness testing.
The Hardness testing Inspector shell be responsible for
Selection of equipment
Selection of proper test block
Surface Preparation
Testing
Recording the test results and report preparation
4. EQUIPMENT
The equipment used for the purpose of measuring Brinell hardnes number.
XXXX Portable Hardness tester or equivalent is used as a mobile alternative
to inflexible brinnel stands.
5. REFERENCE
The following standard shall be used as references as applicable in addition to
the instruction in this procedure
ASME B.31.3 Chemical Plant and Petroleum Refinery Piping
ASME Section IX Welding and Brazing Qualification
ASME Section VIII Div. 1
API 1104 Welding of Pipeline and Related Facilities
API 650 Welded Tank for Oil Storage
API 653 Tank Inspection, Repair, Altration and Reconstruction
6. INSPECTION PROCEDURE
6.1 Hardness Test Inspection
6.1.1 General
After PWHT, Hardness Test shall be perform for the welds in
accordance with Standard/Specification.
Note :
Hardness Test Methods :
Brinell Test :
A specified load is applied to a flat surface of the specimen to be
tested, through a hard ball of specified diameter. The average of the
indentation is used as a basis for calculation of the Brinell Hardness
Number (BHN).
2F
HB=
π D¿¿
Where:
BHN : Brinell Hardness Number
F : Load, kgf
D : Diameter of steel ball, mm
d : Average diameter of the indentation, mm
The machine applies a load of 500 kilograms for soft metals such as
copper, brass, and thick stock. A 1500 kilogram load is used for
aluminum castings, and a 3000 kilogram load is used for materials
such as iron and steel. The load applied in this test is usually 3000,
1500, or 500 kgf, so that the diameter of the indentation is in the
range 2,5 to 6,0 mm. The full test load is applied for 10 ti 15 seconds.
Two diameters of impression at right angles are measured, and the
mean diameter is used as a basis for calculating the Brinell Hardness
Number (BHN), which is done using the conversion table given in the
standard :
6.1.2 Preparation
The area to be Hardness Tested shall be grided smooth prior to
PWHT.
d. For normal services, both weld metal and heat affected zone
(HAZ) shall be tested with no value to exceed 225 HB
