Answer the following

1. What is Prejudice?
Ans: Prejudice means to judge other people negatively or to see them as inferior without actually
knowing anything about them.

2. Differentiate between prejudice and stereotype.

Ans: Prejudice is to judge others negatively or to see them as inferior without actually knowing
anything about them. On the other hand, stereotype is a bunch of traits that is associated with all
members of a specific social group.

3. Mention two stereotypes related to the role of women.

Ans: Two stereotypes related to women are:
(a) Women take care of the household.
(b) Women are not good at sports.

4. How can we co-exist in a society without any conflict?

Ans: When we respect every individual irrespective of religion, gender and class, we can co-exist
without any conflict.

5. What is a stereotype? What leads to its formation? What is the biggest disadvantage of a
stereotype?
Ans: A stereotype is a bunch of traits that are associated with all members of a specific social group.
Prejudice often leads to stereotypes. The biggest disadvantage of a stereotype is that it tends to ignore
the uniqueness of individuals.

6. Define discrimination. Why does discrimination take place? Explain with an example.
Ans: Discrimination means treating people differently or negatively on grounds of age, disability, gender,
income, nationality, color or religion. Discrimination is the result of prejudices based on diversity and
inequality. For example, certain groups of people are not allowed to enter temples or schools, drink
water from taps and wells used by others or barred from living in a particular locality.

7. How did the caste system bring inequality in our society?

Ans:Caste-based discrimination has existed in our society since ancient times. The society was divided
into four groups based on their occupation. The four castes were Brahmans, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas
and Shudras, placed in descending order. Under this system, tasks like cutting hair, making pots, washing
and cleaning were regarded as tasks of less value. People pursuing these activities were regarded as
untouchables or dalits. This caste system gave rise to hatred and led to inequality within the society.

8. List four provisions made in our Constitution to fight all kinds of discrimination.
Ans: The four provisions made in our Constitution to fight discrimination are:
a. Equal rights are given to all.
b. State favors disadvantaged groups.
c. All Indians are equal in the eyes of the laws.
d. Everyone is free to pursue any occupation.

1. Why do you think it is important for all people to be equal?
Ans: It is important for all people to be equal because it leads to equal opportunities for all.
Discrimination is responsible for inequality- both economic and social. When people get equal
opportunities, the country also progresses.
