Hi! I am Glenn! Come and join
me as we learn and understand
bias and prejudice.

GUIDE CARD

As we engage with others, it matters how we play a part in

society and how we treat other individuals. Both positive and negative
effects may result from how we communicate, think, believe, and feel
about other people, groups, ideas, events, and things. In our
interactions, we must always treat others fairly and without prejudice.
You can learn about community biases and prejudices by
reading this Strategic Intervention Material (SIM). This will assist you in
gaining the crucial reading comprehension skills necessary to identify
bias and prejudice, enabling you to contribute to a kinder, more
equitable, and healthier community culture.

Least Mastered Skill:

Differentiating Biases from Prejudices EN9LC-IVf-13.3

Sub-Tasks:
1. Identify statements that show biases and prejudices.
2. Cite examples of biases and prejudices in real life.
3. Provide ways to minimize or avoid bias and prejudice.
Bias and prejudice are often used
interchangeably because of their close
relationship. Let us examine how these
ideas differ from one another.

GUIDE CARD

Bias is a tendency to look at things in a certain way, in preference to another way. It

means a tendency to favor or support or a particular person, group, thing, or point of view over
another resulting in unfairness.
Some of the most common types of bias are:
1. Anchoring Bias - This happens when people rely too much on current knowledge or the
first information they come across while making decisions.

Example: According to what I know, I selected you because I thought

others were not as excellent as you.

2. Media Bias - This happens when journalists and news producers in the media choose
what to report and cover.

Example: This occurs when journalists and news producers in the

media choose what to report and cover.
3. Confirmation - This happens when a person searches for, interprets, favors, and
remembers information that supports their beliefs and points of view.

Example: When he discovered that the report went against his beliefs,
he went directly to work gathering information to prove that he was
correct.
4. Conformity - This happens when a person takes an incorrect or uncomfortable option
in order to fit in and satisfy a group of others.

Example: Even when I disagreed with my own wishes, I followed

them in order to be happy. I felt guilty about my helpless choice.

5. Halo Effect - This occurs when a person only notices a person's positive traits and allows
their perceptions of anything else about them to become distorted.

Example: Only Leo's documents were thoroughly inspected among the

applicants since the manager was impressed with his awards and
commendations.
GUIDE CARD

Prejudice refers to a negative view or feeling that is held without understanding,

consideration, or justification. Particularly with those who are different from another group, prejudice
can have a significant impact on how people act and interact with one another.
The most common types of prejudice include:
1. Racism - This is the belief that distinct groups of people have different
personality
traits and may be divided depending on the power of one race over
another.

Example: All Chinese in the country are regarded as viral carriers due
to the COVID-19 illness.

2. Sexism - This is prejudice based on gender or sex.

Example: Women are weak, lacking the power and capacity to

undertake the tasks of males.

3. Classism - This is a prejudice based on socioeconomic class or classification of

people based on their wealth, employment, income, education, and
social network.

Example: The poor are ignorant and do not benefit our country; the
government should not treat them properly.

4. Ageism - This is a negative attitude toward seniors, old age, and the aging
process.

Example: All adults, including those who need to retire, should not be
employed because they are a burden.

5. Religion - This is the attitude towards a person or group differently because of the
beliefs about religion.

Example: Because his employer found a problem with his religion, he

was fired from his work.
Studying bias and prejudice is fun, isn’t
it? Now, I am sure that you can do the
following activities about bias and
prejudice.
