*a) 1.5% < Sulphur < 2.0% in the fuel, BN 40 can be used for short periods at a high
cylinder oil feed rate.
*b) 1.0% < Sulphur < 1.5% in the fuel, BN 70 can be used for short periods at a low
cylinder oil feed rate.
*c) These BN 57 and BN 60 cylinder lubricants may be used with fuel in the sulphur
range 0.5% < Sulphur < 3.5% m/m. In case of sulphur dependency application,
they must be considered as BN 57 or BN 60 as appropriate. The BN 60 break-
point and feed rate adjustment must be applied, see Technical Bulletin RT-113.

*d) This BN 50 cylinder lubricant can be used up to 3.0% sulphur in the fuel.
*e) This BN 55 cylinder oil can be used for the sulphur range:
1.5% < Sulphur < 2.5% for continuous and
0.5% < Sulphur < 1.5% for intermittent operation up to 10 days.
*f) For newly built RT-flex and W-X engines.
*1 Limited to an engine bore size of maximum 62 cm.
*2 Limited to engines built before 1995.

Table 1

Remark 1:
BN refers to the lubricant Base Number expressed in mgKOH/g as determined by
test method ASTM D 2896.

Remark 2:
This Appendix 1 with the listed suppliers of validated lubricating oils is part of the
Data & Specifications bulletin RT-138.
Remark 3:
Intermediate BN cylinder lubricants (40 < BN < 70 mgKOH/g) may be used
provided that performance is regularly monitored and lubricating oil feed rate is
adjusted to avoid piston underside BN which is too low. Residual BN which is too
low can lead to excessive corrosive wear and scuffing. The following values are
recommended when operating on fuel in the range 1.5% < S < 3.5% m/m.

1. The safe corrected piston underside residual BN to avoid piston ring and liner
corrosion is greater than 25 mgKOH/g.
2. The alert corrected limit for piston underside residual BN to avoid excessive
corrosion is about 15 mgKOH/g.
3. The danger corrected limit is less than 10 mgKOH/g piston underside
residual BN and is likely to lead to excessive corrosion and rapid piston ring
and liner wear if not corrected. It often leads to scuffing and the rapid failure of
piston rings and very rapid corrosive liner wear.

Lubricating oil application instruction and liability

Application instruction
• The application and handling of lubricating oils must be in compliance with the
general Wärtsilä lubricating oil requirements and recommendations given in
the Operating and Maintenance Manuals.
• In addition, lubricating oils should be used as recommended in the Wärtsilä
Service Bulletin RT-18.4 “Running-in of Cylinder Liners and Piston Rings”,
RT-113 “Sulphur-dependent cylinder oil feed rates” and other related bulletins.

Liability
The supplying oil company assumes all responsibility for the performance
of the lubricating oils in service of all Wärtsilä 2-stroke engines to the
exclusion of any liability of any Wärtsilä company belonging to the Wärtsilä
group. The oil company along with other possible manufacturers and
distributors of the products in question shall indemnify, compensate and
hold harmless Wärtsilä and companies belonging to the Wärtsilä group
from and against any claims, damages and losses caused by the
lubricating oils in question.
