Case Study: Solbar Industries

Project ID:
Company: Solbar Industries
Location: Israel
Year: 2010
Cooling tower side stream
Description:
filtration
Turbidity, suspended solids and
Goal:
organic matter reduction
Capacity: 80 m3/hour 3 towers
Water Source: Surface water

The Problems:
• Solbar is a global leader in specialty soy proteins and Items Existing Values Required Value
soy isoflavones Turbidity (NTU) > 10 <5
• ln one of its production sites in Israel the customer
wanted to reduce high organic load in the cooling TSS (ppm) > 30 < 10
tower system and minimize the use of biocides COD (PPM) > 100 < 30
intented to treat biological fouling.
• There was also residual vegetable oil found in the
tower, which was leaking from the process side.

Technical Solution:
• 15% side stream screen filtration was replaced with 10% Dryden Aqua Activated Filter Media (AFM®) Grade 1
side stream filtration, using shallow bed media filters
• Consequently, biocide and chlorine dosing level was significantly reduced in all cooling towers
• Colloidal matter and suspended solid levels were reduced significantly
• Oil level was significantly dropped
• Chlorine dosing level was also significantly reduced in all cooling towers
