CASE STUDY

Design of Pump system, raising main and water storage tank

Project summary description:
A certain village has 4,000 residents and around 12,000 animals. The demand of water per person is
70 litres per day for drinking and all domestic uses. The average need for each of the animal is 20
litres per day. The rate of growth of the population is 3.1% per year and that of the animals is 3.5%
per year. It is required to design the water supply system to meet villagers’ requirements for the
design period of 20 years.
Water from the existing treatment plant is required to be pumped to an elevated water storage tank
through a raising main before being transmitted to the consumers at the village by gravity flow.
Depending on the water usage of the consumers and better operation schedule, the proposed
pumping period is two hours. Further, it is expected that, the actual consumption of water in a village
tends to vary from hour to hour and from day to day and this effect has to be taken into account,
however, the estimated total net demand per day should remain constant. Again, it is assumed that,
the estimated non-revenue water is about 25% of the water demand.
Therefore, it is required to determine the required pump and the raising main pipe and an elevated
given that the difference in height between the minimum level of treated water at the treatment plant
and the ground level at the storage tank site is 10.6m.
Tasks to be performed

1. Calculate the population of people and number of animals at the end of the project design period.
Use a simple population growth formular: 𝑷 = 𝑷𝒐 (𝟏 + 𝒓)𝒏 where Po is the present population,
r is the rate of growth and n is the number of years (design period).

2. Determine the design water demand for the village at the end project life. Consider maximum

3. Establish the tank geometrical dimensions from which the total dynamic system head of the
pump is calculated.

4. Adopt principles of pump design to select an appropriate type of pump

5. Follow the principles of stresses in thin-walled vessels to select the required pipe.

6. Design the elevated water tank adopting the prevailing standards and references.
