Part 1: Check Your Habits

Respond to the prompts below to explore your digital media habits.
Check Your Habits

What are your current digital habits? (Keep in mind: Habits can be positive, negative, or both.
Brainstorm and list as many of your habits as you can.)

1. I go on Discord to chat and goof around with my close friends, but it takes up most of the time. 🤪

2. I use Instagram to upload pictures of my doodles on my art account and look at other art other content
creators post. However, this sometimes makes me feel insecure about my own art, but it’s also nice to
see others being creative. 😅

3. I use Facebook Messenger to check on my notifications for both school-related responsibilities and
friend group chats. 🤪

4. I browse Youtube to watch videos or to listen to indie rock/folk punk music while I work. 🤩

5. I use Schoology to check on updates for my classes and student council. 😐

6. I use Twitter to check the latest tweets from my favorite content creators, but a lot of Twitter drama
incidents have happened lately so sometimes the feed is negative. 😬

7. I check Reddit for the latest posts, memes and animal videos. 🤣

8. I use Snapchat to play around with filters, but I don’t actually post or share anything. Sometimes
trying to take selfies or pictures of myself makes me insecure about my appearance. 🙃

Next, draw (or insert) an emoji next to each habit to show how it makes you feel.

My digital life is like a bubble because it blocks out the rest of the world.

My digital life is like a good book because it’s addicting and hard to stop reading.

Part 3: Personal Challenge

Considering your responses in Part 1 and 2, use the steps below to create a personal challenge.
Choose

Choose one digital habit you want to change or to try to do differently. Why is it important that you
change this habit?

One digital habit I’d like to change or to try to do differently is constantly comparing myself to others
when looking at my feed on different social media platforms. When we constantly compare
ourselves to other people, we waste time and energy focusing on the good of other peoples’ lives
instead of the good in our own. It’s a self-destructive habit that deprives us from joy. It may be
easier said than done, but we should all at least be self-aware.

Challenge

Challenge yourself. Make a plan for how you would like to change your habit. Consider when you
will do something different and what you can do instead. (When we're trying to change a habit, it's
not enough just to say what we won't do. We also have to come up with something to do instead!)

In order to change my habit, I plan to limit the amount of time I spend on social media feeds. I also
plan to write sticky notes on my desk that have reminders or bible verses in them like “The reason
why we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind the scenes with everyone else’s
highlight reel. – Steven Furtick”.

Boost

Boost your challenge. What are some ways you can give your new habit a "boost" and make it easier
to do? If you're trying to break a bad habit, what are some things you can do so that you don't slip
back into old ways?

I plan to boost my challenge by counting at least 3 good things in my life everyday so that I could
practice being more grateful for what God has blessed with me with.

Reflection

Time to share. Say something about what you learned for today and how this discussion helped you.

This discussion made me realize one of my self-destructive habits and helped me figure out what I can do to
help break that habit. I also learned that is it important to manage my time wisely because we only have a
short amount of time here on Earth, and it’s best not to spend majority of that time on my gadgets. This lesson
reminded me to live a little more. I’m going to try spending time with my family today instead of browsing
through my feeds.
