THE TEN BRANCHES OF SOCIAL SCIENCE AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO SOCIAL


SCIENCE

A. ANTHROPOLOGY - It is derived from the Greek words, Anthropos which means “man”
as in human being and Logos which means “study.” It is the scientific study of the origin of
humans.

Anthropologists - are people that practice anthropology, which is the study of humanity.

 Herodotus of Halicarnassus - Many experts consider him the first historian and
anthropologist.

B. ARCHAEOLOGY - The word comes from the Greek archaia (“ancient things”) and logos
(“theory” or “science”). It is the study of the human past using material remains.

Archaeologist - is an expert on history who gains expertise through experience with


historical documents and artifacts.

William Flinders Petrie – the father of archaeology.

C. ECONOMICS - focuses on the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and


services, and analyzes the choices that individuals, businesses, governments, and
nations make to allocate resources.

An economist – a person who studies economics and is an expert who studies the
relationship between a society's resources and its production or output.

Adam Smith – an 18th-century Scottish economist, philosopher, and author who is considered
the father of modern economics.

Economists use different economic theories to solve various economic problems in society. Its
scope can be distinguished through Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. 

- GEOGRAPHY - It is the study of the diverse environments, places, and spaces of Earth's
surface, and this also includes their interactions.

 Ellen Churchill Semple - an American geographer and the first female president of the
Association of American Geographers.

Eratosthenes - a Greek Scholar who is the first one to use the word geography.

D. HISTORY - It is the study of the past.

Herodotus – the father of history. He was a Greek historian and geographer from the Greek
City of Halicarnassus

E. LAW - It is a set of rules that are created and are enforceable by social or governmental
institutions.
