CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 INTRODUCTION.

In this chapter 3, the researchers will explain about the research design, population and unit

of analysis, sampling technique and procedure, data collection and procedure, measurement

items, methods of analysis and summary for chapter 3. All these elements are used for the

researchers to successfully complete the research.

3.2 RESEARCH DESIGN.

This study design uses Quantitative research where the researchers will explore, develop and

find the influence of motivation on the intention to pursue study among students. The

researchers will use this research design to collect and analyse the data in order to get the

answer for the research study.

3.3 POPULATION AND UNIT OF ANALYSIS.

The target respondents are students who study at public universities and private universities

throughout the Klang Valley. Sampling population consisted of 173,254 students. There will

be 150 students only will be sample for this research because the researchers choose the

minimum sample of study to representing the population of students in Klang Valley. The

researchers also use Krejcie and Morgan’s (1970) table to find out the sample of population.

For unit of analysis, the researchers interested in analyzing the influence of motivation on the

intention to pursue study among public universities and private universities in Klang Valley.

1
3.4 SAMPLING TECHNIQUE AND PROCEDURE.

The researchers using convenience random sampling in this research study because

convenience random sampling focuses on gaining information from students studying at any

universities in the Klang Valley. Convenience random sampling is the easiest method of

sampling because the respondents are selected based on availability and willingnes to take

part in this research study.

3.5 DATA COLLECTION AND PROCEDURE.

The researchers using online survey as a data collection. All items are related to independent

variables and dependent variable. All answer choices are using a scale of 1 to 4 only (1 -

strongly disagree; 2 - disagree; 3 - agree and 4 - strongly agree). All items will be entered into

the google form by the researchers and the google form link will be given to all universities

students in the Klang Valley.

3.6 MEASUREMENT ITEMS.

Research Questionnaires for Dependent Variable : Intention to pursue studies.

1. I experience pleasure and satisfaction while learning new things when pursuing studies.

2. I think that education will help me be better prepared for the career I choose when I

pursue studies.

3. I pursue studies, to prove to myself that I am capable of completing my studies.

4. I can enter job market in the field I like if I pursue study.

5. Pursue study will help me make better choices about my career orientation.

6. Pursue study allows me to continue learning about many things that interest me.

2
7. I pursue studies to show myself that I can succeed in my studies.

Research Questionnaires for Independent Variable 1 : Achievement.

1. I set high standards for myself and aspirations.

2. I exert myself today in order to benefit afterwards.

3. I work hard to reach my objectives.

4. I enjoy discovering new stuff.

5. I enjoy putting a lot of effort into my studies.

6. I prefer to do routine and simple studies as opposed to difficult ones.

7. I am happy with my current accomplishment even though it is not better than others.

Research Questionnaires for Independent Variable 2 : Affiliations.

1. I always interact with other students.

2. I seemed to be encouraged whenever I interact with other students.

3. I learned so many things by interacting with other students.

4. I get a positive experience whenever I communicate with other students.

5. I feel satisfied when I able to form a new friendship with other students.

6. I like to participate in activities with other students, so then I can ensure my performance

on the activities.

Research Questionnaires for Independent Variable 3 : Power.

1. I pursue studies to be admired by others.

2. I pursue studies to reward a good job.

3. I pursue studies to be expert in my job field.

3
4. I pursue studies to give instruction to others.

5. I pursue studies to avoid laziness.

6. I use my personal power responsibility for pursue studies.

7. I pursue studies to solve problems together with everyone involved in a matter.

The total items in this research study are 27 questions. Got 7 questions for dependent variable,

7 questions for independent variable 1, 6 questions for independent variable 2 and 7 questions

for independent variable 1. The researchers using scale options from 1 until 4 to get answers

from respondents. To get the final items, the researchers have done an adopt and adapt

process where the questions have been modified according to the research title using

questions that have already been made by others.

3.7 METHOD OF ANALYSIS.

In this Quantitative research, the researchers will explain about descriptive analysis and

inferential analysis.

3.7.1 DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS.

This research use nominal scale which include gender and age. This research also use ordinal

scale which is level of education. Respondents are required to answer all the demographic

questions in this research. The researchers will explain more details in chapter 4 for decriptive

analysis.

3.7.2 INFERENTIAL ANALYSIS.

The purpose of this research is the researchers wants to see the normality analysis and

loading factors after the results of respondents have been collected. The researchers relate

4
this research with McClleland’s Motivation Theory and will explain more abot inferential

analysis in chapter 4.

3.8 SUMMARY OF CHAPTER 3.

This chapter overall covered about research design which is the researchers using

Quantitative research. Besides that, the target of repondents only specific to universities

students in Klang Valley and convenience random sampling is one of the best sampling

technique that can be use by researchers in this research which is using online survey through

google form to collect data from respondents. Moreover, the researchers did an adopt and

adapt to get 27 final items for questionnaires. In the next chapter, the researchers will explain

more about finding and results after getting answers from 150 respondents in google form

using SPSS.
