1.0 Introduction

This is a Design of Box Type PUP at Schedule Design Ch. 108+875 and 117+622. The internal size of box is 7000 X
4650 having Single cell. The invert level of box is proposed to match with the cross road level. This design
pertains to the design of box type PUP with average cushion 310 mm.

2.0 Codes & References

IRC:6-2014 - Standard specifications and code of practice for road bridges Section II-Loads and Stresses.
IRC:112-2011 - Code of practice for Concrete Road Bridges
IRC:78-2014 - Standard specifications and code of practice for road bridges.
IRC:SP-13 - Guidelines for the design of small bridges and culverts.

3.0 Design Concept / Approach

The box is proposed to be Castinsitu. The RCC box is designed for various live load combinations as per IRC:6
2014.

The dead load of the box is computed. The earth pressure on outer side wall is computed with soil parameters of
C = 0 t/m2, Ф = 30°. Live Load Intensity is worked out as per IRC:112, by placing Live Loads at various locations
giving maximum moment & forces. The resulting load has been applied into the STAAD 2D model of per metre
width along with all possible loads like dead load, SIDL and soil pressure from side walls with various
combinations.The project area is located in seismic zone III and span is less than 15m , hence there is no need to
check for seismic force.

LOAD CALULATION :

1. Dead Load (Self Weight of bridge) :

For the calculation of self-weight of bridge density of concrete is considered as 2.5 t/m3.

DL of railing, wearing coat and crash barrier is considered on top slab, while load of 0.000 m
depth of soil is considered on bottom slab.

Weight of Earth cushion on top slab = 0.000 t/m

Weight of Crash Barrier = 1.000 t/m
Weight of Footpath = 0.000 t/m
Weight of soil (dry) on bottom slab = 0.000 t/m

2. Superimposed dead load (SIDL) :

Weight of wearing coat / overlay = 1.600 t/m

Weight of wearing coat / overlay on bottom slab = 0.400 t/m

3. Live Load :

The bridge is designed for the 70R Wheeled and 70R tracked loading as per IRC: 6-2014 with
corresponding impact factor.

4. Breaking force :-

As per cl. 211.2, IRC 6-2014 Breaking force is considered 20% of first two lanes plus 5% of loads on the lanes
in excess of two.
Therefore, breaking force = (2.05*5.63*7.11 x 0.2 ) + (2.05*5.63*7.11 x 0.05 ) + ( 2.40*2.51*5.04 x 0.05 )

5. Soil Pressure From Side Wall: - ( When soil is dry )

As per Cl.214.1.1.1 of Amendment-2 to IRC:6-2014, Coulomb's equation

Ka = (cos^2(f-a)) / (cos^2a*cos(d+a))*[1/1+{(sin(f+d)*sin(f-i))/(cos(a-i)*cos(d+a))}^0.5]^2
Ka(hor) = Ka*Cosd

Considering, property of backfill behind sidewall

g t/m3 c t/m2 Ф d a i
2 0    
For earth pressure , Ka hor. = 0.279 and K0 at rest = 1 - sin(Ф ) = 0.5
Ka(hor) = 0.5
As per Cl.214.1.4 of Ame.-2 to IRC:6-2014 bell's eq. for, Active Earth Pressure = (Ka x g x h) - ( 2 x c x Ka ^ 0.5)
Lateral pressure at top due to ( i ) Live load surcharge of 1.2 m & ( ii ) Earth Cushion of 0 m height

Calculation for Permissible Bearing Pressure of Rock

Bore RL 12.127 m
Founding RL 11.318 m
Depth of foundation below GL 0.775 m
As per IS 8764:1998
Corelation between UCS and point load index = 22x Point load index
2
Point load index = 39.82 kg/cm at depth 1.5 m
2
= 836.22 kg/cm
As per clause 706.3.1.1.2 of IRC 78-2014 the value of factor of safety
based on unconfined compressive strength of the parent rock may be taken as 6 to 8.
The allowable bearing pressure, thus obtained is to be further restricted to not over 3MPa.

Permissible Bearing Pressure (qa) = UCS in kg/cm2

8
Where UCS = Unconfined Compressive Strength in kg/cm2
= 836.22 UCS result is at depth 6 m
F.O.S = 8
Considering the above values,
2
qa = 104.5275 kg/cm
2
qa = 1045.275 T/m
qa = 10.2437 Mpa
