ECBC
ECBC Introduction

❖ ECBC, Energy Conservation Building Code is a

document that specifies the energy performance
requirements for all commercial buildings that are
going to be constructed in India and is mandated
by EC Act, 2001.

❖ The Energy Conservation Act 2001 empowered the

central government to prescribe an Energy
Conservation Building Code (ECBC). ECBC was
launched in May 2007 developed by an Expert
Committee, set up by India’s Bureau of Energy
Efficiency (BEE).
ECBC Notification
❖ ECBC –Energy Conservation Building Code

❖ Initially the code has been launched by Bureau of Energy Efficiency

(BEE), Ministry of Power, Govt. of India

❖ As per the code, State Governments initially amended/amending the

code as per their climatic conditions, temperature, requirements, scope
etc.

❖ Some of the states have been amended and then notified to make
mandatory use of ECBC in upcoming Commercial Buildings in the
state.
Objective & Scope
❖ The Objective of ECBC is to provide Minimum Requirements for Energy
Efficient Design and Construction of Buildings and their systems.

❖ ECBC is applicable to buildings or building complexes that have-

• Connected Load of 100kW** and above OR
• Contract Demand of 120kVA** and above OR
•Conditioned area of 500m2 and above
-and are intended to be used for Commercial purpose

❖ Buildings intended for private residential purposes only are not covered
by the Code

Energy Performance Index
Energy Performance Index (EPI):

EPIof a building means its annual energy consumption in kilowatt-hours per square meter of the area of the

building which shall be calculated in the existing or proposed building as per the formula below.

𝐴nnual 𝐸nergy 𝐶onsumption in kWh

EPI =𝑇otal 𝐵uil𝑡−up 𝐴rea (excluding storage area and the parking in the basement)in m2

To comply with the Code, EPI shall be calculated based on one of the following:

Prescriptive Method including Building Envelope Trade-off Method (see §3.2.2)

Whole Building Performance Method (see §3.2.3).

EPI Ratio: of a building means the ratio of the EPI of the Proposed Building to the EPI of the Standard Building.

Principle 24
Efficient Electric Equipment & Systems
(5 Points)

GEM Principle 24
• Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) compliant power transformers

• Energy efficient motors (IE2 (high efficiency)/EFF1class/BEE 3 star rated

For industrial projects, consider the motors installed for non-process applications only.
Principle 25
Use of Imperishable Energy Resources
(8 Points)

GEM Principle 25
Install onsite (5%-25%) or offsite (10%-30%)
imperishable energy systems to offset a
part of electric contract demand of the
project
Note – For industrial projects, only consider non-process electric demand loads
for sizing the imperishable energy system capacity.
To reduce the dependency on exhaustible
fossil fuels.
Principle 26
Optimal Use of Natural Light
(6 Points)

GEM Principle 26
Optimal utilization of natural light to reduce the
reliance on artificial lighting and saving lighting
energy
• Simulation Method
• Manual Method

40% Occupied Area –Essential

l
60% Occupied Area – 2 Points

80% Occupied Area – 4 Points

• When natural light is available in the space then artificial light can be
switched off. It saves a lot of energy consumption.

• Daylight / Occupancy Sensors / Timers play a very vital role.

• ECBC 2017 Daylighting requirements as per Chapter 4 Building

Envelope, Section 4.2.3 Daylighting

• Simulation Software: Ecotect / Radiance / IES-VE / DIVA (Rhino)

• All occupied spaces in the building should comply with the
minimum requirements set out in ASHRAE 62.1:2010
(5 CFM per person + 0.06 CFM per sq. feet)

• Install outside fresh air filtering media with at least MERV 8

(Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) or higher rating.

• Install permanent carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring and

alarm systems to ensure the adequate supply of outside
fresh air at all times.

• All occupied spaces in the building comply with an increase

in outdoor air ventilation of 20% above the outdoor air
ventilation rates established in the above essential
requirement.
