Jim’s Gym needs some help with the membership numbers and the fitness class timetables to maximise the
use of the facilities, trainers, and supplements. He uses matrices to help guide some of his decisions over the
next year.

Question 1

The cost of a membership per month to Jim’s gym is given in the matrix below, along with the current member
numbers of each type. There are different types of memberships available depending on the client’s
circumstances, given as Student (S), Concession (C), and Adult (A).

Membership Current Membership Membership Cost

Type Numbers ($)
Student (S) 30 10
Concession (C) 40 25
Adult (A) 100 40

Matrix M (shown below) represents the cost of each membership at the gym.

10 𝑆
𝑀 = [ 25 ] 𝐶
40 𝐴

three classes she is looking at are for Step (s), Weights (w) and Yoga (y). After asking three of her friends how
many classes they take in a week and the total time they spent in all classes, she finds the following
information:

Question 5

Jim sells supplements through the gym in three different ways. They are either sold at the front of the gym (F),
sold online (O), or put into the discount bin (D).

Jim finds a pattern to the percentage of stock sold in each way, and how he moves stock to the different
methods of purchase. This is shown in the transition matrix below. Note that a row and column have been
included for any stock that is sold (S).

this week
F O D S
0.5 0 0 0 F
0.1 0.6 0 0 O next week
𝑇 =[ ]
0.2 0.1 0.5 0 D
0.2 0.3 0.5 1 S

The initial number of items of stock at each method of purchase is shown in the initial state matrix:

250 F
100 O
𝑆0 = [ ]
50 D
0 S

The transition matrix T predicts that in the long term, all of the front, online, and discounted stock will be sold.

a) How many weeks will it take for all of the front stock to be sold or moved to a different selling method
(that is when the amount of front stock is less than 1)?

In order to keep his shop always supplied, Jim intends to buy and restock his shop front with 100 new
supplements each week, and his online shop with 40 new supplements each week. He will not buy any new
stock for the discount bin.

This means the Matrix 𝑆𝑛+1 , which is used to determine how many supplements are in each place would be
given by the equation 𝑆𝑛+1 = 𝑇𝑆𝑛 + 𝐵

c) Fill in the two missing values from Matrix 𝐵, which represents this restocking of supplements

0 F
40 O
𝐵 =[ ]
0 D
0 S

d) If Jim restocks his supplements from the start of the year, find the number of supplements offered
online after 2 weeks. Show all matrix equations used to find answer.

After 2 weeks, Jim thinks that he miscounted the initial number of stock at each method of purchase as his
week 2 stock numbers differ from his calculated ones in part c.

He finds that after 2 weeks he has 225 in the store front, 179 online, 134 in the discount bin, and 342 sold.

This can be represented through the state matrix:

225
179
𝑆2 = [ ]
134
342

e) Using the Rule 𝑆𝑛+1 = 𝑇𝑆𝑛 + 𝐵, find the initial state matrix 𝑆0 .
